Emergency Diversion Signs

Post by qwertyK »

Are they only on motorways and other main A-roads - because I was out the other day and saw this just off the A125, in Romford

I've never seen a red one before - only yellow. Why would there be one of these here?

Rail replacement or buses on diversion I'd have thought... Something like that.

Publicly used ones are the normal prescribed 8 pictograms, however there are a few others which as far as I am aware are the:
Black Cross (used like the prescribed ones, but not actually one)
Seven Bridge
Red Diamond (equal sides) & Blue circle - these were exclusively used at the Southwick Hill Tunnel diversion route, however replaced using normal prescribed symbols in recent years, although the old symbols are still found on some signs.
old blue circle, new diversion symbol - also the sign is wrong since the A270 is non-primary and the A293 is primary...

Any other symbols are likely designed for special purposes such as emergency vesicles, buses (as c2R said) or maybe left over from an event such as a cycle race?

There are others along there. Bus route stickers are likely but I wonder about the Ford works and chemical deliveries?

The black X is now prescribed from 2016.

So, I though I'd spotted a sign carrying all eight standard symbols - then realised that one of them is the black X, and the hollow triangle is missing. With the black X being added, does this mean there are now nine standard symbols (I cant see how you'd make a hollow X)? And is there anywhere all nine appear together?

Super rare The N. EAST as well, presumably to differentiate from the The N. WEST directed towards the M6. Historically, Brampton Hut was always "The North A1".

There are indeed now officially nine emergency diversion sign symbols; the cross was added in 2016 (see the official definition for the nine emergency diversion symbols, it's row 13 "Indication of a diversionary route"). There isn't a hollow X.

SABRE's previous record for "most emergency diversion route symbols on one sign" was 7, so I think you may have set a new record!

So it looks like this has been slightly improved on... While I saw eight of the nine symbols, they're technically on two signs (one above the other). But over in the Botched Roadsigns thread, Bfivethousand has found all eight on a single sign.
The full set of nine still seems to be elusive, though.

That is probably a left over from when Oldchurch Hospital was left at that roundabout. It has been demolished/turned into flats now and replaced by Queens Hospital which is behind the GSV car.

What does the sign have to do with the hospital?
That's not the junction where the hospital was. This is s at Roneo Corner - the old hospital site is some distance away from this site, at the roundabout before

Roneo Corner seems to have expanded in recent years. I always associated it with the B&Q site and the funny block of shops that form a traffic island aka the Roneo Link.
Anyway, as I said last year, this is probably for local buses or trucks heading to/from the M25. It certainly predates Queen's Hospital by a good few years.
