In Glasgow 1977 was M8 J31 to J26 originally called M8 J12 to J7?
Why were today's M8 junctions J31 to J26 called M8 J12 to J7 back then?
Did they just not know how many junctions there were going to be between (today's) J26 and J6?
Were J12 to J7 the actual numbers shown on the physical junction signs back then, or was this just a mapping error?

This is how it was - the section through Glasgow wasn't trunk as it was a Strathclyde road at the time, so it didn't have junction numbers.
Inexplicably, this meant the M8 junction numbering stopped at J6 (A73) and resumed at J7 (Renfrew east). It was fixed in the 80s I believe.

Yes, I believe there was a period where M8 had junctions 2-6 and 7-12 but a third disconnected bit in the middle was the Glasgow Inner Ring Road. I don't think that the junctions there had numbers at all at that point !
