A total closure of M5 from 5am to 4.30 pm, when northbound reopened. Southbound reopened this morning about 8.30am. Several old road laybys and house access loops, leftovers from the extensive improvements most of the way from Gloucester to Exeter in the very early 60's, including S3, bend straightening, widening and a few short D2's. Perhaps if the M5 hadn't happened, it would have ended up like the Exeter-Plymouth section.
Not a single Police car seen on the A38 and no diversion signs at all. Some of the CC signs were becoming obscured by leaves as they emerged for spring.

Whilst at the first layby, a van driver pulled in and asked if I had a map. Naturally I did. He said his Satnav had gone 'haywire' and he didn't know how to get to the M5. I said, follow all these people or, try some of the lanes. Without a map, he couldn't do that so, he rejoined the procession. Tech can fail but, old school maps always work, if you have them that is......

Re: A38 - Longest Lane again
It did happen... except it's now called the M5
See B3352 etc for how it used to be
Re: A38 - Longest Lane again
Not in the way I meant it, a dualled GS'd A38 to Exeter and then on to Plymouth. Probably mostly the line of the M5, but with some online dualling as seen west of Exeter. Cullompton is the only example of that actually happening, being A38 from 1969 to 1976.
