Tory MP - rename A1 as the Queen's Highway
A sycophantic, publicity-seeking Tory MP wants to rename the A1 as the Queen's Highway as part of the celebrations for her platinum jubilee.
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/edwa ... 32388.html
To be fair, he is linking the change to the need to complete the various upgrades that need doing.

The Oxford Dictionary defines the "Queen's Highway" as the public road network - so that MP needs to catch up.roadtester wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 08:40 A sycophantic, publicity-seeking Tory MP wants to rename the A1 as the Queen's Highway as part of the celebrations for her platinum jubilee.

That thought did cross my mind as well - it would be very confusing!Ruperts Trooper wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 08:43The Oxford Dictionary defines the "Queen's Highway" as the public road network - so that MP needs to catch up.roadtester wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 08:40 A sycophantic, publicity-seeking Tory MP wants to rename the A1 as the Queen's Highway as part of the celebrations for her platinum jubilee.

Oh, it's Edward Leigh. Well we all know he's bonkers anyway.

Surely the GNR is the road that goes to Paradise City?

Maybe Queen Elizabeth Expressway would be better or Elizabeth Expressway and hopefully it would push for more upgrades to get it to a decent standard.

To be honest I was more expecting there to have been a call to name or rename something major in honour of Prince Philip, but I have not seen any reports of that yet.

Renaming the A149 King's Lynn bypass Queen Elizabeth Way hasn't led to anything like that

One suggestion was that one of the Royal Navy's still-to-be-built Type 26 frigates should be named after him - one symbolic point of significance is that one of the planned jobs of the Type 26s is to escort the UK's new aircraft carriers, so the frigate HMS Duke of Edinburgh/HMS Prince Philip would escort HMS Queen Elizabeth, rather as the D of E escorted HMQ in life.M4 Cardiff wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 12:31 To be honest I was more expecting there to have been a call to name or rename something major in honour of Prince Philip, but I have not seen any reports of that yet.
The suggestion is slightly complicated by the fact that names have already been allocated to the entire run of eight ships and, given that they are all being named after UK cities, one of them is already due to be called HMS Edinburgh.

I can certainly vouch for that too!

Queen Elizabeth Way, and they could nick the route markers from Ontario. They could make it link everywhere with infrastructure named after her, so from the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, via the various Queen Elizabeth Hospitals, bridges, courts, and other roads.
I have no objection to naming infrastructure after people, but there quite a lot of things named in her honour across the world and UK already.

And anyway, if you are renaming the A1, it should be after The Doctor.

Re: Tory MP - rename A1 as the Queen's Highway
Well given that Prince Philip had a rather distinguished naval record and that there was a previous HMS Duke of Edinburgh that idea has some merit. None of these ships have been launched yet and only 2 laid down so while renaming serving vessels has always been considered unlucky this should not be an issue.roadtester wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 12:44 One suggestion was that one of the Royal Navy's still-to-be-built Type 26 frigates should be named after him - one symbolic point of significance is that one of the planned jobs of the Type 26s is to escort the UK's new aircraft carriers, so the frigate HMS Duke of Edinburgh/HMS Prince Philip would escort HMS Queen Elizabeth, rather as the D of E escorted HMQ in life.

Re: Tory MP - rename A1 as the Queen's Highway
There are already several roads in the UK called Elizabeth Way so I don't see any point in adding another. The Great North Road in its various forms has been around for a very long time. I would prefer it to be left alone.exiled wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 12:53Queen Elizabeth Way, and they could nick the route markers from Ontario. Scostman currently has a non-streamlined A4 boiler, so more a A3.5
Re: Tory MP - rename A1 as the Queen's Highway
The Queen Elizabeth Way between Ingleby Barwick and Thornaby is a rather nice D2 with central barrier and wide shared use access for NMU's either side. Not bad given its unclassified.

Re: Tory MP - rename A1 as the Queen's Highway
Perhaps the A1 should be named after a significant figure who links London and Edinburgh.
The D of E would presumably fit on that score but it could also be e.g. Gordon Brown Way (ducks for cover), a bit like the way Brian Clough Way connects Derby and Nottingham, the cities that are the homes of the two main clubs he managed during his illustrious career.
