Rugby Services M6 J1 now open

Post by roadtester »

This so far seems to have passed unrecorded on the forums, so I thought it might be worth a mention.

Rugby Services (Moto) has now opened off J1 of the M6. I haven't been there yet but this should fill what I always feel is an over-long gap between Corley on the M6 and Rothwell on the A14.

In a sign of the times, the extensive EV charging facilities seem to be the centrepiece of the PR/reporting:

There's been an extra road constructed to allowed dedicated access to the services and A426 north - not yet visible on GSV. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.40855 ... 471476,17z

I passed through junction 1 last week and saw the signs for it. First I knew about it, but I forgot to flag it up on here.

I stopped there yesterday. It's very spacious and is quite well equipped, with great baby changing facilities and both an indoor and outdoor children's play area. The indoor one is currently closed because of Covid.

Google and OSM are both struggling with the new layout - it looks like the intention was just to extend the roundabout north to make space for the new exit, but is that what's happened? OSM shows the original northern side of the roundabout still in situ as a cut-through.

Edit: the cut-through is what MSA Online think has happened, and that's good enough for me!

The cut through is what happened. There are some, er, dodgy signs there too.

There is a new A road services just off M1 J16 at the start of the Flore bypass. Esso, Starbucks, Greggs, Subway. Usual suspects but, welcome anyway.

Stopped off at said services yesterday. They've got 12 Tesla Superchargers and 12 "high power" (350kW) Ecotricity chargepoints, and the HGV parking is fenced off from the rest of the site.

One other thing that I noticed was that the ATMs don't charge for withdrawals, which is extremely rare (if not unique) for an MSA.

A bit suprised they have any ATMs. Can't recall when I last used one of them for withdrawing cash.

Although I have used one in the last few years to deposit a cheque, but would not do that now as can pay it in directly from the bank's app.

I stopped here for the first time a day or two ago and I’ll probably be going there for a coffee this morning as I am overnighting nearby.

Simply in terms of its location, it’s a good addition to the network, plugging the gap between Corley on the M6 and Rothwell on the A14 but it falls slightly flat as an experience for reasons I can’t quite put my finger on - perhaps it’s been done slightly on the cheap in terms of materials/landscaping or whatever.

Two notable points - loads of EV charging, and the absence of a hotel. The latter is quite an unusual omission these days - I think shared with Strensham southbound.

My bank doesn't do this, annoyingly - and their branch closures has meant that I've ordered a paying in book from the bank and resort to dropping them through the bank's letterbox at night when I can park right outside...

If businesses like British Gas could stop sending out cheques, that would be really useful though...

The planning application included a hotel, but it appears they may be waiting for a company to express interest in running same prior to constructing it.
