Work has now started on the Downhill Lane junction upgrade - six months ahead of schedule, apparently.

I went through Testos last weekend. The main bridge deck for the A19 is in place. But that's all there is for now.

When it's done I might finally start using that as my route to the Tyne Tunnel instead of the A194.

Testos Roundabout

Saw a report on Look North last night that stated the A19 flyover on Testos Roundabout will be completed on Sunday, and it will now be possible to drive from South Shields to the A1 in North Yorkshire without encountering a roundabout.

SMT Note: Seemed sensible to merge this with the main thread.

Further than that - Cramlington to the A1. Or, if you then join the A1, Buckden.

The A19 widening from Portrack to Wolviston is progressing well, HE are suggesting its months ahead of schedule but it was a major pain today as the A19 was closed between Norton and the A689 with all traffic being sent up the Wolviston Road which is the original Billingham bypass

You still have the toll booths at the Tyne Tunnel to impede your progress, but the Testos flyover, like the improvement to the Silverlink Roundabout north of the Tyne, has removed two major bottlenecks on the A19.

Give it a decade for them to upgrade to cameras with a 24-h window, like Dartford.

Ideally no tolls, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

It's incredible to think on that section of A19 10 years ago you had to stop for both Testo's and the Silverlink and traffic was still only going through one tunnel.

Tyne Tunnel ANPR is happening late 2021.

Another good improvement for the A19. There also "A19 north of Newcastle junctions" in the pipeline for RIS3.

So Moor Farm presumably. We do normally go via the tunnel anyway if headed for the A189.

That'll make the loop out of the northbound fun - the tolls at least keep speeds down and make the offside exit easier to deal with. I can see that being a future collision site if something sensible isn't done.

Thanks for the info. I still need the A19 north of the A1239 junction, so will have to do that before ANPR payment bans me for life. (assuming the old payment method will be abolished)

True. I did read that they were intending on marking it down to two lanes (kind of obviously) and use the freed land for a service area.

There are a few variants of the scheme discussed in TfN documents I've quoted previously. Seaton Burn, Moor Farm, and a couple of the GSJs south of there are all mentioned (though it might be minor changes in the latter cases at least).

You could go all the way down to Brent Cross in London if you joined the M1
