Angel Hill Junction

Post by Skipsy »

I felt like sharing to those unfamiliar with it, this junction in Sutton on the B2230, between Angel Hill, A parallel road to the West (which counts as Angel Hill), All Saints Road and Vermont Road.
Not only is it a 5-way junction, but it is probably one of the most irregularly shaped ones. Probably most notable about it are the movements possible from Angel Hill SB onto All Saints Road or onto Angel Hill NB (leading to Sutton Common Road).
Generally no one would never have the need to turn sharp left or sharp right here (quicker routes can be taken further back down the road), but it is technically allowed.

Other places with similarly sharp turns are this 3-way junction in Bristol which allows you to make a sharp left, and this 4-way one in Torquay.

Share some junctions below with very sharp turns.

There's a TOTSO here on the A496 near Ffestiniog.

Turning left onto the B4291 must be permitted as it's mentioned on the sign. However, the turn is far sharper than indicated so the only way to achieve it is to be driving a vehicle with a tiny turning circle - and even then you don't want anyone else around to get in the way.

The junction on Castle Hill, Lynton is pretty unbeatable for tightness!

This junction on the A26 is very tight.

Ignore the odd position of the ADS on the opposite side of the junction! Used to make that turn quite often when heading between Haywards Heath & Crowborough.

Never really noticed it before, but the other end of that road has a sharp angle, although this one isn't really used to make that movement - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.03978 ... 312!8i6656

Before the A23 Handcross - Warninglid scheme happened, it was possible to do a left turn here off of the A23 - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.05012 ... 312!8i6656

Is it just me, or are those very unusual stop signs? Seems very odd to compel straight-on traffic coming towards where the camera is to stop when they can see pretty clearly that nothing is coming?

It's because of the very steep hill on the road from the left. Traffic is going up a steep, narrow hill as it approaches the junction, and this setup ensures they have absolute priority to avoid anyone stopping on the hill. It actually works very well.

There are two near me that offer something of a challenge to the motorist. Here emerging from the B6105 on to A628 isn't much fun, the road at the stop line is steep and the sight line to the left is limited. If your handbrake or clutch control isn't up to much you'll struggle. I've never seen anyone make a left turn out of it though, nor a right turn into it come to that.

Here turning left into B6062 and you will almost certainly encroach onto the opposite side of the road. Vehicles turn right out of the B6062 are now required to go to the nearby RA as the line of sight to the right is negligible, though that requirement is relatively recent. Anything bigger than a car would be advised to go to that RA rather than attempt the left turn in though I'll bet plenty don't.

Anywhere with mountainous terrain will have these sub 45 degree junctions of doom.

A5 near Llangollen: https://goo.gl/maps/DUeB8aiikiF9qWDEA , https://goo.gl/maps/5BBbtAoggb1t8g8s5

Heptonstall: https://goo.gl/maps/FvQWKrhd2HTMqVMq9 - this one is rightly restricted! - as is: https://goo.gl/maps/tUt3GuhJkeSdt3GU6
Pecket Well: https://goo.gl/maps/ZgYwLZBCzbHR8QbA9 - this had to be widened to allow buses to make the turn (yes).

Woodhead 1.

Woodhead 2.

The second one is the worse of the two, when emerging from the B-road you are below the level of the A-road and visibility is godawful for traffic coming from your left.

Approaching Angel Hill from the south gives you this mess of a sign. I assume the bottom left is meant to indicate "no through road", but it looks more as if you're on the wrong side of a duel carriageway all of a sudden.
