Public roads where most traffic is headed for a single destination

Post by Peter350 »

As a follow on from the highest quality cul-de-sac thread, I thought it might be interesting to look at roads which aren’t necessarily cul-de-sacs in name or nature, but effectively act as one for most traffic using it since they are all heading for the same destination.

To qualify, the road must be publicly owned and traffic levels of that road must halve upon passing a destination, that destination being a single location of interest such as a major hospital, supermarket or tourist attraction.

As an example, the main road to Salisbury District Hospital dramatically drops in quality from a S2 with footpaths and cycle lanes to a S1. I would imagine at that point, most traffic on the higher quality section is turning into the hospital rather than carrying straight on.

How about New Road/Bradford Road in Winsford, Cheshire? It's a decent quality S2 coming off the A54, and needs to be - it leads to the salt mine, and in winter there can be nose to tail HGVs queuing to load salt. There's a couple of miles of good road, until you pass the final gate to the mine. Then the road narrows and crosses a S1 bridge with a 3T MGW limit. If you're driving something light, you can continue all the way into Whitegate, but it's a much narrower and lower quality road.

Both Sellafield and Dounreay draw a huge majority of the traffic on the A595 southbound and A836 westbound respectively, in the mornings at least.

Watling Street at Bean is basically used as a slip road to the A2 by 99% of traffic. The only reason people drive the other way is if they have visited the timber yard or cafe and don't want to continue onto the A2 Coastbound.
