A59 / B6164 junction Knaresborough

Post by XC70 »

Anyone know what has happened at this junction?

On GSV it looks reasonable enough. Heading East on the A59 there is a clear stop line, red cycle box and stop line before the red box.

I drove through on Sunday however, and on the ground it is a bit different. There is the cycle box, with the 2 stop lines, then beyond there are what look like a further 2 stop lines and the lights seem roughly in line with the furthest of the stop lines.

I was first in line, and hadn't got a clue where I should properly stop so ended up stopping just before the cycle box.

Have they moved the location of the traffic lights?

Can't help, but given the new direction signs on GSV are also wrong I'm calling 'cock up'.

I'll see if I can pop down and get a photo of it - once the Yorkshire Show is over this week! HG and Knaresborough are a nightmare this time of year as I'm sure you're aware.

I did know that some work had been done on this junction in the last year (changes were made to this following the changes at Bond End (A59/B6165/A6055)).

You're probably also aware that Knaresborough is expanding to the east with a few more housing estates being built along the A59.

I remember when Knaresborough stopped at Chain Lane. But that was getting on for 40 years ago....

Managed to take this photo this evening - the A59 looking east. Yes, there is the approach, then a red cycle box, then a gap, a white line, another gap, then the final white line.

Thanks for looking, glad that it is not just me, I was starting to think I had imagined it! It is a right mess. I have no idea where you are legally supposed to stop?

I'd be raising that as an immediate risk to life defect, truth be told. If a cyclist stops in the ASL and they're supposed to be further along that's inviting a fatality right there.
