Highest house number within London

Post by Skipsy »

What's the highest house number reached within London?

I believe it may be 1597B London Road, Croydon, Just before it becomes Streatham High Road and right on the border of Croydon and Lambeth boroughs.

The 1935 map shows there was a number 1599 next door! butted right up against the river.

Not London, but Coventry Road Birmingham/Solihull goes up to 2599 near the airport.
Let it snow.

No postcode has that amount of addresses within it, I’d imagine the road is divided into many postcodes.

In my experience it is rare for a single postcode to cover more than about 80-100 properties. I live in a road that has a single postcode, but it is a cul-de-sac with about 15 addresses.

Postcodes are typically over no more than 50 addresses. They should not (bet there's an exception or two) embrace more than one road. Occasionally it may exceed this, for example where a couple of old large houses with grounds have been replaced by flats.

Regarding high numbers, both Uxbridge Road in the west and Green Lanes in the north go on for miles, so may be runners-up. I believe it used to be, long ago, a post office responsibility to assign numbers; it later became a local authority one.

Both of those are split up with different named segments like Ealing Broadway so numbering isn't continuous. The same for Edgware or Harrow Road

This house sits right on the outer edge of London. Literally!
The house itself is in the London Borough of Enfield. The land immediately to the north of this property is Hertfordshire!

Not all forms use postcode though, a couple I've used recently started with Town, then Street and as mine is 100+ it took a while to get to mine, the second time I encountered it my address was out of sequence as it has a suffix too which appeared to break the numerical listing which it didn't on the other. Postcode lookup is much easier but presumably there's a cost involved to access it.

Maybe. There's a slightly dubious 9156 (on a road otherwise un-numbered) and 2820 Owls Green  - see here for the details.

I understand the average number of addresses per post code is 15, with a maximum of 100. Where I live there are 35 properties with the same postcode, unusually 25 of the properties do not have a number, only names. Royal Mail manage very well with this but anyone visiting/delivering for the first time it often causes problems. When someone who is trying to find our house calls to say "I've found the postcode, but I can't find your house" our default reaction is to go out to the road and wave ... "here we are"

I remember my Dad mentioning there was a road in Watford that went into 4 figures.

Stockport Road in Levenshulme - Longsight certainly gets into the thousands.

The road name and building numbers there change arbitrarily at the local authority boundary, so there's the illogical situation of buildings opposite each other being numbered as part of different roads.

And more "stupid places to change a road name", one I found when looking for addresses there last year.

If anyone's got NLPG access then you could probably do a fairly straightforward query to find highest numbers in an area.

Park Approach in Leeds has some high numbers...

e.g.

4100 PARK APPROACH, LS15 8GB

Now that is a good topic...

Apton Road, Bishops Stortford manages to escape termination at a roundabout and continue in a different direction... it then continues past cemetary road and then becomes Scott Road, half way between Cemetary Road and Fairlands... it simply doesn't make any sense.
