Doubtless had some more elaborate structure been built the author would have been complaining of the money that was wasted by not building a simple functional replacement.

Surely we at Sabre should be pleased when the press features local roadbuilding?

Odd example to pick really. It's not exactly great but I've seen far worse. Not sure what these wonderful continental ones the writer's on about are, you're just as likely to get some bland piece of uninspiring concrete there. A modern bridge reconstruction that even I'll just shrug my shoulders at here...

Good to know it's reopened. The closure was a bit annoying when we were making regular trips to Melton in the last weeks of my father in law. (Not the normal route, but a good alternative in the event of A1 blockages (or boredom)).
The bridge looks pretty much how I would have expected it to look.

A primary four-digit A-road?

Just proving that our numbering system has no rational basis.

I rather like the aesthetics of the new structure. Looks rustic Vs uniform. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

See also, A4174. Sometimes I think it's just because the somewhat congruous three-digit numbers were all already used. For example within Bristol the A420, 432 etc are all subordinate to and feed into the primary A4174... it's very odd. I almost think ring roads should have been afforded another numbering system or inherited the number of a less significant local road. Certainly the A4174 could have inherited A38 as the latter route is a real mishmash that shouldn't be considered all-purpose in the 21st Century.

This is what you get when civils are given a budget and left unsupervised ...

A major main contractor I know was speaking about a civils subcontractor. "Oh, they get on and do the job. But you must make sure not to use them on any part of the works where the final finish will be visible to the client".

I've driven on the A4540, A4123, A4150 today; all primary I believe.

A certain really dodgy website has a page that lists 158 examples from A1001 to A9000.

Belgium has separate numbering for ring roads, starting with Brussels, which has R0. IIRC, part of this is motorway, and part all-purpose. An R number is no guarantee of a particular standard of road, and not all are full rings.

Some that spring to mind are A5103, A1079, A4123, A1058, a bit of A5117 (more was primary once but became A494)

And glancing at an atlas, A4076, A4232, A4042, A1101, A1122
(got bored after a few pages and stopped looking)

A1079 was originally part of A66.

I like A4444. It's so obviously a totally artificial number, plus it's only about half a mile long and dual-carriageway all the way. And it's still primary.

From the SABRE Wiki: A4444 :

A4444 is the number allocated to the northern section of the Black Country Spine Road, between the A463 Black Country Route at The Lunt Junction and the A41 and A4038 at Moxley Junction. Constructed in the early 1990s, it is a remarkably dull dual carriageway whose only intermediate junction is a connection, on the northbound carriageway, serving a private warehouse facility.

The road runs parallel to and a short distance west of a stretch of the Walsall

I wanted to renumber the A6119 to A677 as it would have given a single route number from the A59 to M65 and made a good strategic diversion in case of problems on the M65, but got told no...

In fact my proposals to rationalise the whole of Blackburn were told no, because, well Capita did their own effort in 2005 and screwed it up.

Only whole numbers are allowed. Irrational numbers such as Mπ or Ae(M) are right out. :coat:

 Then then the road number could correspond to its direction. Perhaps that would be too complex.
