If we're counting outside the UK, then I think 8 in a day is my record from Leamington to Spa Francorchamps:
M40, M25, M26, M20, A16, E40, R0, E42

Within the UK I can't come up with a journey that's used more than 4:
M25, M26, M20, M2 a few times
M69, M1, M18, A1(M)
M62, M60, M61, M6

However in April our journey from my in-laws to Glasgow will take me on 7:
M62, M60, M61, M6, A74(M), M74, M8

I think my record was set last year which was 7:

A1(M)
M25
M11
(non-motorway)
(M25)
M3
(non-motorway)
A329(M)
M4
M32

The first non-motorway part included the formerly motorway Blackwall Tunnel Approach Road.

UK based 9 in a day:
M40; M42; M5; M6; A74(M); M74; M73; M80; M9. SE25 to Dalchreichart.

If we're allowing international, then I might have a claim for this title.

M25 (UK)
M20 (UK)
A16 (France)
A25 (France)
A27 (France)
A8 (Belgium)
A16 (Belgium)
A7 (Belgium)
A4 (Belgium)
A6 (Luxembourg)
A3 (Luxembourg)
A31 (France)
A4 (France)
A35 (France)
A5 (Germany)
A3 (Switzerland)
A1 (Switzerland)
A3 (Switzerland) (reprise)
A13 (Switzerland)
Non-motorway to destination in Italy

You could argue the M25 and the M20 were not in a day, as I reached Dover before midnight clicked over. However the trip in total was less than 24 hours.

And I said I hated motorways? They're pretty good in the small hours and in places like Switzerland. The only holdup was roadworks on the A4 in Belgium and some non-motorway bits in Zurich (now bypassed).

M73 then onto the M8, then onto the M74? How? Why?

That explains it :) . I couldn't get my head round how you'd got from the M8 to the M74.

Mine is 6.

I've done a journey including the M898-M8-M74-M73-M80-M9 and a journey involving the M8-M74-M73-M80-M876-M9.

Near me, the signposted route from the central Fife coast (Aberdour, Dalgety Bay, Inverkeithing, etc.) to Dunfermline involves two motorways- the M90 and the A823(M) despite the time spent using motorways on that route probably being a minute at most. I wonder if any shorter motorway journeys that involve multiple motorways can be made.

Allowing international trips, I managed 15 in one day:
In the UK: M3, M25, M26, M20
In France: A16
In Belgium: A18, A10, R0, A3, A3
In the Netherlands: A76, A2, A73, A52
In Germany: A52

I was travelling to Elmpt, an army base just beyond the Dutch border (not far from Roermond) to fetch my son who had injured his back. We left at silly'o clock in the morning, took the Tunnel and arrived in time for supper in Elmpt.

As small token, my son took us to the cellars in the officer's mess. I took a look at the prices of the various drinks and thought "Those are good prices!" I took a second look and realised that the prices were in euros, not pounds (even better!)

M32, M4, M5, M42, M1, M18, A1M, M62 for 8

My natural route to anywhere north of Stirling is 7:

A1(M) - [A66] - M6 - A74(M) - M74 - M73 - M80 - M9

My natural route to north Wales is 6, or 7 if you count M62 twice:

A58(M) - M621 - M62 - M60 - [M62 again] - M6 - M56

If I was going to mid-Wales via the A483 you could add M53 after M56.

Done these 10 many many times, Doncaster to Aberdeen...

M18 - M62 - A1(M) - M6 - A74(M) - M74 - M73 - M80 - M9 - M90

Plus A roads in between of course - come on lets make it the A66(M) as well.

(Edited as I forgot the short section of M90 near Perth)

For me, it would be one of my trips up to Scotland. There's been multiple occasions over the years where I've done:

M53 > M56 > M6 > A74(M) > M74 >M73 > M8 > M898

I've not been up there since the opening of the M74 extension, hence the addition of the M73.

Another stand-out one would be the return trip from Bannockburn, in around 2008/9. I remember we were staying at the Premier Inn just off the M80/M9 interchange. The home trip:

M80 > M73 > M74 > A74(M) > M6 > M56 > M53

There's the 'Sat Nav' way to Sunderland which I generally avoid but have done on a few occasions in the past:

M53 > M56 > M6 > M62 (x2) > M60 > M1 > A1(M)

I can't think of any more motorways I've done in a single journey than these examples, off the top of my head.
The journey is never over until the arrival.

My former regular trips between Aberdeenshire/Fife would tend to be one of:

M90 - M9 - M80 - M73 - M74 - A74(M) - M6 - M56

Sometimes adding on M53, and other times inserting M876 between M80 and M9 (and M9 and M90!)

I couldn't be sure what my record is, but I'll bet my highest number of new motorways in one day - or one trip - would have involved a trip to Scotland.

The most likely would been a weekend in Scotland in 2005 in my shiny new Rover 75 (Scotland seemed very close when I was living in Lancaster). That would've meant M74, M73, M80, M9 on the way up, and M898 and M8 on the way back down. (My score would not include the A74(M), because I had previously driven that on a trip to Edinburgh).

I still owe Scotland 60p, because I didn't know that the Erskine Bridge toll was cash-only!

Do you know it? I spent one night there waiting before returning to the UK, but not before my wife and I nipped into NL to do some shopping in Roermond.
