Which dumbbell or two-bridge roundabout GSJ in England would you prioritise for a freeflow right turn?
Several of the most infamous roundabouts on the strategic network in England are proposed to be bypassed with freeflow right turns - Winnall (A34/M3), Thickthorn (A11/A47), and most recently Copdock (A12/A14). I thought it would be interesting to see which remaining dumbbell or two-bridge roundabout GSJ would be first in line for similar treatment.
I've only included grade-separated routes with at least three consecutive GSJs. As I'm limited to 20 options for a poll I've excluded the following:
Junctions in Scotland or Wales:
A90/A92
A449/M4
A4232/M4
M8/A720
Junctions that might realistically receive a freeflow right turn under pipeline schemes:
A2/A299/M2
A5/M42
A404/M40
M69/M1
New town junctions:
A182/A194(M)
A557/M56
A1231/A19
A1231/A182
A1260/A47
A1260/A1239
Junctions unlikely to be top priorities for a freeflow right turn:
A69/A1
A194(M)/A184
A435/M42
A5/A38
A5148/M6T

Of the list presented I'd say M40 > A34 is in the most pressing need of a free-flowing right turn.

That's the one I voted for too. I also use A38/M1 a lot but A34/M40 is really the more important one. Recent tinkering with additional lanes hasn't really worked. More stacking space for queues maybe but they still spill back onto the M40.SouthWest Philip wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 21:46 Of the list presented I'd say M40 > A34 is in the most pressing need of a free-flowing right turn.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?
Big and complex.

I'll go for A12/M25 J28 - the most regular lock-up of the signalled roundabout I know.

South Mimms: A1 north to M25 east and likewise M25 west to A1 south.
M40 to A43: free flow M40 north to A43 north east.
M40 to A43: free flow M40 north to A43 north east.

It has to be A419/M4 for me as doing that and having an eventually dualled A417 would mean a completely free flow route between the M4 and M5.

M40/A34 for me too. I regularly use both A331 junctions in the list but would still prioritise M40/A34 because there's almost nothing else in the same league, in terms of strategic importance and the failure of the current junction.

Strange. I can't seem to find M1 - A453 anywhere!
From that list, I've plumped for Sideway (A50 / A500) simply because I'm most familiar with it - although it was a devil of a job fitting in a roundabout there, let alone a free-flow right turn!
A34 - M40, fully understand that one, I'm most looking forward to M1 - M69, maybe not in my lifetime though.

Another Junction on the A34 warranting a free-flow right turn is Bullington Cross, from the A303E to A34S, but that's a whole other mess

This was included in the similar poll for stackabouts that I made years ago:

I would also suggest the A338 North to A31 East at Ashley Heath to cater for the heavy rush hour and holiday flows. It would complement the segregated A31 West to A338 South traffic lane and mean free flow right to Bournemouth station.

On a personal note, A4232 > M4 desperately needs a westbound freeflow to the M4 as we have discussed and even sketched up in a previous topic. The fact it's a roundabout at all is a travesty considering its intended use at construction was as one of the roots of a ring road. I suspect there are greater priorities, but for a quick win for the Welsh Government/Cardiff and the Vale Councils, it's got to be improvements to the PDR in general, including J33 the Rover Way missing link.

That's a great call - an oversight on my part not to list it.Brenley Corner wrote: ↑Sun Nov 07, 2021 18:24 I would also suggest the A338 North to A31 East at Ashley Heath to cater for the heavy rush hour and holiday flows. A38/M1 for me as it's a mess most times of the day, and local bias . Not sure how it could be done as it is very constrained.
As a bonus it may mean that my colleague might make it into the office on time for once. He'll probably just set his alarm 5 minutes later instead
Honourable mention for the A404/M40 junction. If they sort that roundabout in the middle of the A404 and take a look at the silly M4 J8/9, it'd make for a decent M25 avoiding route.

Re: Which dumbbell or roundabout GSJ in England would you prioritise for a freeflow right turn?
My priority here would be M25 westbound to A1(M) northbound. It's a long way round that roundabout to turn north.thatapanydude wrote: ↑Sun Nov 07, 2021 00:38 South Mimms: A1 north to M25 east and likewise M25 west to A1 south.
If I'm going from the A1(M) southbound to M25 westbound (and I do, reasonably frequently), I usually go via the A414 and A1081 to M25 J22. That's usually a bit quicker than the A414/A405 North Orbital route to M25 J21.

Both aren't on the list but I want to nominate
A19(N) -> A189(N) at Moor Farm
and
A1(S) -> A1231 at Foxpond Roundabout
Both major bottlenecks. Not sure which I'd choose out of the two but both are badly needed. Probably the second one as it's got a nasty merge across 3 lanes.

Re: Which dumbbell or roundabout GSJ in England would you prioritise for a freeflow right turn?
I cant think of any way of doing this but the right turn at M1 Junction 21 from A5460 Leicester/Fosse Park to M1 north really is in need of a freeflow access.
Re: Which dumbbell or roundabout GSJ in England would you prioritise for a freeflow right turn?
A1(M) south onto M18 south-west not listed? I suppose at the moment the impact of a freeflow right turn might be limited by the broader lack of capacity on the A1 around Doncaster anyway, but the queues do back up from there.
Re: Which dumbbell or roundabout GSJ in England would you prioritise for a freeflow right turn?
The entire junction complex, covering M1 J21, the junction with the Outer Ring Road, the two horrible signalised roundabout monstrosities on Narborough Road, and the various other signalised accessories leading to business parks and retail parks, would ideally be razed to the ground with a targeted bombing campaign and replaced with something else altogether. It's an absolute failure of land use and transport planning.

I would agree though I would tackle this through either a new dual carriageway from the A1(M) j2 to M25 J22 broadly following the line of Coursers Road or upgrading the A414 and A1081 with some GSJ and widening.M4Simon wrote: ↑Mon Nov 08, 2021 09:27My priority here would be M25 westbound to A1(M) northbound.
