A38/A4104: Iron Age village found

Post by chaseracer »

The staggered crossroads of ancient childhood memory is being replaced by a roundabout. Something interesting has lain beneath.

Interesting.

With its close proximity to Upton, but away from the where the river is now.

Here is a video I took of the junction a few weeks ago: https://youtu.be/HXI_YyyHZ8Y while driving though from Pershore

There are undoubtedly thousands of such sites across the country. I spent 20 years living in the village of Gamlingay and with the land having been owned by various Oxford and Cambridge Colleges and no sign of Roman Settlement it was assumed the history of the settlement was well documented. This all changed when they decided to build a new industrial estate they uncovered an unsuspected saxon settlement and beneath that remains going back to the stone age.

Much the same happened at Acklam Hall Grammar School when I was a pupil in the 1960's. It was know that the 17th century Hall had been built on an early site as the church was Saxon in origin but considerable remains of earlier settlements were found under the Rugby Pitch including part of the moat of the Mediaeval fortified house and what looked like the remains of iron age round houses.

Not a scooby, but it is very relaxing on the eyes.
