New Services at M180 J5?

Post by IAN »

Just spotted this. https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/news ... MtJ8yYrL2A

Looks like it'll be designed more as a Truck Stop. Another one at a junction, what happened to the idea that junctions should not be encouraged as sites for future services?

Like all policies of this nature it goes out the window when £££ and traffic flow is taken into consideration. A truck stop at M180 J5 collects both Humber Bridge and Immingham traffic and immediately increases usage potential which is essential to making the proposal viable. I don't see much to object to with this one, we are desperately short of safe and secure HGV parking for one in the UK and Brexit will not make that problem go away, quite the opposite given freight checks will eat into driving hours considerably.

I can't see the operators of the existing site at J5 being very happy. Looks like they've just turned the abandoned Little Chef into a Starbucks, and built an EV charging station - and now there's going to be a new service station the other site of the motorway to take away most of their customers.

MFG own that site, they're a big group so won't be bothered too much.

The only thing I would say it is very convoluted way to get to it once off Junction 5, but you would get another access off the roundabout though

When we stopped at the current services in October, it was only selling a very limited range of food. The current owners perhaps don't have much ambition for the services.

If they wanted a truck stop they could have applied for planning permission, as it is they dont have to provide the sort of secure site that a truck stop would need. Given the proximity of Immingham Docks and the Humber Bridge I can see there is a need for one.
