Does this subject include significant demolitions to make space for future road improvements that were never built? My example is demolition on 3 of 4 corners at the Corner House junction in Heaton, Newcastle. (Heaton Rd, Newton Rd, Stephenson Rd.) I’m almost certain Stephenson Rd was already a 4 lane road.

I often wondered how soon it was after all the demolition had occurred that they cancelled what would presumably have been another GSJ on an extended “coast road”?

There is now, but the flyover was added when the A2 was dualled in the late 60s/early 70s. Before then Westwood Lane would have crossed the A2 at a simple crossroads, and when the Harland Avenue/Hollies Avenue/etc etc route was built several decades before that, its designers would have no reason to think it would ever lose its access to the A2 at the northern end.

Probably relatively well known on here is the A350 Chippenham bypass although no more than 30 years old. Slowly, very slowly it is actually getting dualled though. Bridges and land were all made ready to accommodate a D2 from the start but the fact still remains... why not just have built it as a D2 in the first place?
