A1079 Hull Road, York, Primary or non-primary?

Post by gaustin11 »

On the A1079, West of Grimston Bar Roundabout for about a mile coming into York there are green signs indicating that this is a primary route. However the majority of road atlases I have seen show this as a non-primary a road (coloured red). Is this part part of a primary route or not?

It's a signing error. Everything inside the A64 and A1237 is Non Primary. There are other Non Primary Routes in the area (the A168 and A58) that have the incorrect green signs.

Oh talking of the A58 which is non primary, Leeds city council have added primary signs at the new east leeds orbital…… I could have predicted that.

Speaking of ELOR, what road number will that be designated once it's completed? And will the current A6120 lose it's primary status or be downgraded to lower class of road?

Yes signs are showing ELOR signed as Ring Road A6120, it was always stated in planning documents that the existing A6120 will become the B6902 although it’s not on any signs so far, the only section of existing ring road to remain primary A class is the section that will become the A64.

I believe it was downgraded many years ago. However to replace the signs isn't free and given that most people wouldn't be concerned, I guess they decided to leave the old signs in place, even though they are the wrong colour.

From what the maps indicate, it seems as though all of the remainder of the A1079 is primary, right through Hull to where it ends at the A63.

York seems to have a copious amount of roads empoying primary signage when the section is in fact secondary.

The A1 between Portobello and Old Craighall has the opposite problem.

Many of them old enough to predate the Ring Road which only fully opened around 1987 as I recall.

The northern ring road opened in three states with the final section, the part which crosses the River Ouse and the East Coast Main Line, opening at the end of 1987.
