Strange Thing on M5

From the HAs CCTTV trial, I found this (below) on one of the cameras:

What is the gated bit off the police layby?

If it was a ghost junction, it would be a very tight one, like M50 J3 or M4 (or A404(M)!) J9A

The top of the camera explains where it is: The Lawrence Weston Interchange- which is indeed J18.

It's likely to be one of the smaller motorway compounds which can be used for storage.

... Ah, I type it out and then realise Chris has already explained that. Right, I'll shut up then! :)

I used to pass something similar on my way to work in Watford, on the M1 between junctions 6 and 5. It looked more like a side-road than a layby and lead into a large empty field.
Every morning I'd get on the M1 hoping to see a tractor waiting patiently to pull out. :)
