Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
Thanks, Rambo. I spotted it whilst having a scout around Halton in May this year; I've just tried to find its location on StreetView but can't remember the spot, so if you are able to find it could you post a link, please? (my phone doesn't have the location tag thing switched on so I can't look at that).
Staying with Runcorn street features, I was going to post a photo of the Bass Brewery plaque that is (was) fixed to the bin on Church Street. If you have a look at this https://joethecockershikes.home.blog/20 ... mment-1258 and read the comment I posted then that saves me repeating it here.
I am fairly sure that the last time I saw the plaque was earlier this year and when I noticed it missing in September I Googled for info. The only Google-mention was on Joe The Cocker's site so I wonder if someone saw it on there and decided to go and take it? I think Joe The Cocker's reply that it may have been removed to 'save it' is optimistic at best: it was probably taken for a collection or to sell or, maybe less likely, for scrap.
Do you know the plaque, Rambo?

Thats an interesting one and a new one on me. I'll certainly eep an eye out.Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 10:33Thanks, Rambo. Why are football and cricket banned but other ball games allowed?

Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
If not for the Greater London Council above it, this would be a perfect pre-Worboys sign in Clapton, but made after 1967. It was a new phone and I didn't know how the zoom worked so I may go and do another.

I saw this sign in Cefn Coed near Merthyr Tydfil where the Taff Trail goes onto a narrow footpath before crossing the A465.

And from the other side

I'd be surprised if you could ride a motorbike along that path as it's only just wide enough for a pushbike and there's a barrier just around the corner to prevent a motorbike from passing anyway.
On the other side of the sign is this

Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
That looks like something made by the residents to deal with a specific problem. The council never make signs with random designs like that and it's probably fairly new.

Ok, nothing very interesting here but this https://www.google.com/maps/@53.4074001 ... 312!8i6656 cast iron post is still there locally to me. The wooden board has now gone. I have no idea what it used to say but looks council installed from many moons ago. Perhaps just the street name?
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
My guess would be the street name, yes - I’ve seen other street name signs elsewhere in a similar style.Rambo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 18:53Ok, nothing very interesting here but this https://www.google.com/maps/@53.4074001 ... 312!8i6656 cast iron post is still there locally to me. Here's a nice one near Welwyn. It is mounted on a wooden backing but the fixings can't be seen from the front so I'm not sure what holds it on but it clearly works.

Oops, I made a repeat. Here's one in Pinner I made earlier which I haven't posted already.

I suspect this may be pre worboys era just by the Forth rail bridge, South Queensferry.

The Ladies sign must be a contender for the shortest distance between sign and destination. However with it you at least have a chance of locating it from the Gents if you've got binoculars to hand.
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
No, very much Worboys - that style of flag sign with angled ends was only introduced with the Worboys report, as was mixed-case lettering. The text is in Transport.

Ah thanks for clarifying. Just thought it may have been with the raised letters.

Has always been a permitted option post-1964, seen most regularly with footpath signs: https://www.picfair.com/pics/07791820-a ... tpath-sign

Captured off the promenade at Wallasey along the Mersey

Three in Essex, I'm tempted to classify the Audley End one as pre-Worboys as it's at the entrance to a public park. I've found a few like the Uttlesford ones before, which is odd as it only appears to have existed since 1967.
