Yes late 80s early 90's. But it was rare to see lit BT works as most of their work was cable pulls, duct pumping out and work generally completed in a day; so open pits and holes were rare and having to light overnight was probably not required.
Most of their work I remember the old pit guards, the old wooden or metal tube types without the modern barrier board facials prior to about 1994/5.
Thing I always remember about Telecom and the GPO were they were the first to have folding signs; and those red striped tents. Anybody still see those? The electric board used to use them round here (MEB) too.
I work in Telecoms; most major works are now subbed to contractors so as a guess I bet BT have done away with all their lamps now.
These lamps take one of those big square lantern batteries or smaller ones?

"Bring Back The Old STOP Sign"!!
Think Dorman had a contract supplying Telecom lamps. I had one when I was a Kid. Im talking GPO days here though, probably 1976-77ish. Remember it had P.O. printed on the side and was a standard Traffi Lite design.
Talking of lamps, anybody remember the old metal, yellow 3 footed tripods you could bolt lamps to? Had one of those too. Had one in our garden for years. God knows how it ended up there; Mum made my Dad get rid of it cause she was frightened Id impale myself on it! Never see them anymore; is that why they were banned? If nobody knows what Im talking about, theres a classic episode of "The Professionals" (can get the episode title) where a bullion van gets Hyjacked in roadworks and somebody slings a batchlee lamp, tripod an all at a villan with a shooter!!
I also remember seeing Dorman lamps (the square ones with the crap paintwork) mounted on a single yellow upright bar fixed in a concrete square base. The concrete was boxed in card which I was presume was to protect it. Wouldnt imagine this caught on after the stands were manhandled and thrown about cracking the bases. Think this was a northern thing. Remember companies like the North West Gas Board and North West water using them. Never seen any down south.
One thing I remember down here was Concitina red/white barriers used with both red/yellow paraffin lamps and battery lamps. Guess they got banned too under some daft ruling!

There was a modern comedy on C4 a while back, and one guy said to another 'i like your tent - where did you get it?' and the other guy said 'in the road... some men were in it!'

I saw a folding sign for grass cuting a while back. Not seen a red striped tent for quite some time, however.chglm wrote:

I'm afraid I don't have the spare units anymore. I kept one marked 'BT' for myself, and then managed to find another with the old telecom 'T' logo, both of which I've still got.
