Non-standard, certainly, but it seems to be a mostly accurate depiction of the very non-standard junction. (A half-hamburger with a merge in the middle of the roundabout???). I'm not sure how else you would show it. Now this one could certainly use some improvement.

It's of a similar form to this outside Colchester (North) station.

Another question worth asking is if the best route Keighley is by using the massive non-primary dual carriageway through the middle of town rather than a primary ring-road (A6177) cobbled together from residential streets, why isn't the direct route via the dual carriageway (A650) a primary route?

How did the thought process behind this one go?

What's that font we're supposed to use on motorway signs?
Motorway? Nope
Transport? No I don't think so
Transport Medium? Maybe not
Transport Heavy? Can't be that's far too logical
The same font as the sign opposite? No far too sensible.
Some unique concoction vaguely resembling Arial? Yes that's it!

Not Arial, just Transport, but the wrong version - that's Transport Heavy being used for light-on-dark text which makes it look far too chunky. They've also messed up the alignment of each block and they've just used big numbers for the motorway number instead of Motorway itself.

I might set up a new company manufacturing road signs staffed entirely by monkeys throwing their excrement at each other. I reckon I'd get plenty of business.

I thought it was a bit odd that I'd never noticed that one before and indeed you don't have to scroll too far back through the Google timeline to see the sign it replaced, which does seem to have managed to use the correct motorway typeface.

So often on this thread we see wrongness just being copied like-for-like; here they apparently made a conscious decision to change what wasn't wrong in the first place.

BTW should the LBA sign immediately beneath be black-on-white at this location or is that wrong too?

Good point! No it's a motorway it should jolly well be blue.

So I was driving down the A1 a few days ago like I have many times before, but this time I noticed there was no NSL sign at the end of the motorway section
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.36106 ... 312!8i6656
Does this mean the speed limit goes from Motorway Reg to 30? Does there need to be a NSL sign co-located with the end of motorway regulations?

It's a bit lacking in NSL repeaters on the lamp-posts as well. This is something I spotted on the Red House to Barnsdale Bar section last time I was on it, but nobody, literally nobody was keeping down to 30.

Interestingly, HE have recently (finally) put NSL repeaters on the A56 between the M66 and A682 turn off. The lighting here was installed in the 1990s and never had repeaters. The weird thing? This is a section of trunk road they have just decommissioned all the lighting along, so the NSL repeaters are technically in an unlit section...

This is why using lighting as a means to determine the speed limit is completely and utterly stupid.

Many years ago someone (cough) designed a scheme to bring the rather tatty signing on the Redhouse to Darrington section up to scratch. The scheme got binned. Meh.

To add insult to injury did they then put all the tatty signs on brand new passive poles like they did on the A56?

No idea what happened to it all. Looking on Streetview, there seem to be a few new looking signs.

You mean passively safe as in rusted through? The right hand one on this incorrectly designed sign for example? That can't be in good condition surely?

Some may find this sign a bit none standard. Question is what can get to that speed, and back down before the 40 limit.

 Presumably that's a failed attempt at a width limit but it may not stand up in court. And the road doesn't seem any narrower than the previous bit?

It is, or it was before part of it faded to white. I think it is to avoid large motor homes driving up there to park.

Maybe not technically botched. But plenty of sign clutter https://www.google.com/maps/@53.3050772 ... 384!8i8192
What caught my eye was the separate smaller 'local' motorway panel for Eastham Oil Terminal underneath the main sign. Can't be many motorway directions set up this way..

I am not an expert on UK road signs, but feel that this has to be wrong. All those green patches with no road numbers?
