Re: Botched Roadsigns
For some reason, all of the original signs for the Westwood Cross car park are on a black background. Another and another. A few have been replaced due to layout changes and they have the standard white background.
Also, most of the signs on this road have "A256" in yellow in green, despite the fact it isn't a primary route at this point, whilst the newer ones have the same but with brackets.

Re: Botched Roadsigns
Perhaps the designer or council took inspiration from their American counterparts?
Sign for reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_sign ... D_R1-6.svg
In the States, some signs which deal with pedestrian crossings, such as school ones, are a neon green.
My car gets 90 leagues to the firkin and that's the way I like it!

Re: Botched Roadsigns
This sign https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.42811 ... 312!8i6656 at the start of the Winwick link road has recently been replaced with just 'Leigh' (A572)
Next, this one just up the road by M6 jct 22 https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.44059 ... 312!8i6656 has also been changed to just 'Lowton' A579 on a correct white sign. So no mention of 'Leigh' after the Winwick link road. Oh wait hang on. its mentioned here just before at the northbound entry slip https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.44004 ... 312!8i6656
Also not sure why remove the motoway and it's destinations from the Winwick link road sign as i would say 75% of traffic is heading for the M6.

Re: Botched Roadsigns
The flag sign opposite is no better. Birmingham and Warrington pointlessly shortened to 'B'ham' and 'Wg'ton' and a green sign below for the non-primary A49.Rambo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 19:57 Why the brackets ? https://www.google.com/maps/@53.4708435 ... 312!8i6656
Re: Botched Roadsigns
Yes that's even worse isn't it. Birmingham doesn't even need abbreviating. Newton & Haydock park on the same flag sign but are in opposite directions too.SouthWest Philip wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 23:01The flag sign opposite is no better. Re: Botched Roadsigns
While this photo is from about 40 years ago (the sign specifications may have been less strict then), I still feel that this A419 sign looks wrong as it has a northeastern arrow rather than the fat "right turn" chevron arrow that is almost universal for these kinds of arrow signs today:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/swindonlo ... 050557262/
The A419 followed mostly the same bypass route around the edge of Swindon then to what it does today. I suspect that it may have been acceptable by the standards of the 1960s or 1970s when it was installed, but it looks out of place for today. The typeface is correct, though.
The clearway end sign in the top left of the photo is botched looking, and a number of these old botched clearway signs still survive in parts of Swindon today, though some have been updated/corrected in the past couple of years.
I also very much doubt that the construction company, whose sign is visible in the background, still has the same name as in the photo if they still exist.
Also, how about this sign in Swindon during the 1980s, which has "MOTORWAY M4" written in block capitals:

Re: Botched Roadsigns
Yup, if it was 10 metres further down the road it would be okay. Maybe it was planned to be a little further down the road, however before they installed it they realised the bush was in the way so compromised and put it a little further up the road.
The stack sign on the right is strange though, but I don't think it is against the standards.

The dodgy M56 patch has been swapped. It used to be at the top directing traffic via the Weston Point expressway but has since been changed to the other direction via Daresbury for some reason.

Re: Botched Roadsigns
A few 'iffy' ones that i've spotted recently. copied from GSV.
Poor abbreviations The text looks too big for this sign More white patches on a flag sign.

Re: Botched Roadsigns
Many years ago I surveyed a railway line that includes a very high embankment that was overgrown with brambles. The young lad who was assisting me as chainman was asked to go down said bank and report on the straightness or otherwise of the fence at the bottom. Several minutes later he struggled back up to the top to proudly explain "it's OK, it's straight to the next bend".

No excuses though for pavement-parking.
Cheers

For someone protecting his wing mirrors, said mirrors are conspicuously unfolded. A constant bugbear of mine in Bristol.jonnyf90 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 15:49Maybe they didn't fancy losing a wing mirror?jervi wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 15:05Looks like its using the Emergency Pollution Control Valve colour. also that parked car on the otherside of the road... If you don't use the folding facility on a narrow street and end up losing a mirror, you kind of have yourself to blame.

Re: Botched Roadsigns
Wakefield (A650,M62)
In addition to any technical failures such as not having M62 on a blue patch this is misleading. It implies you would use the A650 then the M62 to get to Wakefield, when the A650 will take you all the way there. M62 should be a separate item. M1 also would be useful but that's understandable as including it might encourage M1 South traffic to take the A650 through East Ardsley rather than joining the M62.
