Looking at the border it has had the end drop off which presumably had a proper arrow on, hence the hand painted replacement.Rambo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2020 22:45 This cheeky one could easily be missed. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.32179 ... 312!8i6656

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
I've passed that one before. Slightly different spelling of Belfast in Irish - the modern version is Béal Feirste, isn't it? Derry is still Doire, though. And never "Londonderry" in the Republic.

Did they often have Welsh-language PW signs in Wales??Big L wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 16:24 Nicely repainted (since Google's last visit) pair in rural Wales.
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
A few pre worboys around Great Budworth near Northwich. Never come across the Police one before.

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
I noticed that as well. Isn't it still illegal to have metric signs on a public road? Why do they have Irish-style width restrictions??
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
A little remote from the camera but clear enough to win the pre-Worboys award. I don't think the others are painted like that but have glossy coatings which fade rather than wear off. And you can just see the P is raised, as well as being more square than the modern one.Sirsquinn wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 18:01 Not sure if this P is or isn't?

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
I would almost drive to Yorkshire for that one, but the effort involved would be excessive. I have a double bend already but no hill signs until Wales this end, roughly the same distance for both.roadsignfan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2020 20:22 I found this in Fylingdale UK

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
The police ones used to be everywhere but seemed to get removed very suddenly in the 60s. There's one somewhere else (Jersey possibly who have a bunch of them) but no more I'm aware of. The village entry signs were optional to use the national or local styles so were never required to be removed, so many are still there. The ones with distances to other places were a national version and as doubling as direction signs should count as part of a national system.
Just to throw a spanner in the works councils were and are entitled to write directions under road names in their own styles, so being non-standardised and council issues probably wouldn't count.
Is there an icon for an anorak?

*Unless the road is actually named 'Main Road', in which case it's a council issue. But it's not so yes it is a very rare and valuable pre-Worboys direction.
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
Ancient monument signs were a separate design and continued being made into the 80s.
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
I think they should continue to be made. They are important reminders of our built heritage, often including ancient bridges and similar.
There’s quite a few near me, although as you usually drive over them, you don’t tend to notice they’re there.

Here it is in all it's glory a few weeks ago. Looks like it's had a repaint. Nice to see it's being looked after although not sure by who. Signs like this certainly add character to towns and villages which is probably why some have survived.DavidNW9 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 22:58100%*Rambo wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2020 22:59 I take it this is 'pre worboys' in Kingsley, Cheshire https://www.google.com/maps/@53.2678461 ... 312!8i6656
