I found a trove in South Somerset, I think!
Pre-Worboys preservation campaign

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
Yes, the trend crosses the border. I've done a few journeys that way and still managed to miss one in Sherborne but not planning to return all that way for one. The area between Yeovil and Shaftesbury is particularly fertile, if anyone needs map locations let me know.

Drove past this one near Ribblehead viaduct recently. I'm surprised at how good condition it's in.

Does this one count? It was once mounted outside Croydon Air Terminal but is now inside the museum.

Talking of Somerset, I was alerted to this one in Somerton by a friend the other day.
I assume it's already known, but it still holds its glass reflectors too.

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
It must have been restored - here's a photo I took of it in 2003:
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
nice pic. looks nice and worn there. It's had a good restoration job but is missing it's black border.
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
A couple more this time at Burton in Lonsdale. The finger post is another great restoration job.
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
This has been posted before. But still hanging on recently along the A49 near Wigan.
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
What's my suspicion why this hasn't already been replaced. Maybe there's a proposal to reduce the limit to 30 so there's no point replacing the 40 sign just yet.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
I just spent an hour shlepping round Sweyne Park in Rayleigh after I found a sign on the bridleway from 2009 which was meant to be near the playground. Off Streetview of course and the photographer didn't reply to my query, but I asked a lot of people and the final one who walked it every day said he hasn't seen any for ages. There were two, one which was vandalised and knocked off in 2009 which said Bridle Path (I don't have one), the other said Crossing Point.
Maybe someone recognises these and can remember if they're gone now if not I'd go back.

Not a restoration job, surely? It's a completely new replica sign by the look of it with channelling and new posts. A very good replica though.

I thought that myself. Perhaps the panals are original and the rest are new.Bfivethousand wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 01:00Not a restoration job, surely? It's a completely new replica sign by the look of it with channelling and new posts. A very good replica though.

A few well known ones. 2 more in Burton in Lonsdale and one in Ingleton.
Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
Stumbled on this one recently at the entrance to a private property next to Harvington Hall, Worcs. I think it is an original sign that has been moved to this location.
Not sure of the date of this one found on a public footpath outside Ludlow. It is made of steel so not sure what could have caused the breakage!

Re: Pre-Worboys preservation campaign
This is slightly off-topic but may be of interest. This film from the East Anglia Film Archive contains a brief shot of a pre-1935 fingerpost sign in Suffolk. If you freeze the film at 8:05 you see the junction of the B1072 and Hall Road in Chelsworth - SABRE maps 1922-23 . This was renumbered B1115 in 1935 - I believe the film was shot in 1933 or 1934 and I wonder how many photo's of signs from this era there are around? The view today looks like this . The building I'm guessing was a shop in the 30s is now a private house.
Incidentally, I screen-scraped the image then contacted the EAFA and asked if I could use it to share on SABRE but was told I'd have to pay £80 and I can't justify that. Of course I have now deleted the image off my own computer, honest I have.
