There was a spate of speed limit cuts in Dudley in 2000 on roads in Lapal such as Spies Lane, Manor Lane, Carters Lane and Kent Road which were all 40 but are now all 30.
More recently the 40 limit on Himley Road between Dudley and Gornal was cut to 30. This is as straight at Broadway and includes a well hidden Gatso.
One of the best surviving 40's is this. What surprises me is the 40's that have been slashed to 30 are on far superior roads.

Neither have Wolverhampton CC, who had a policy at one time of A class dual carriageways = 40 limit, with the exception of A4124 through Heath Town.
Birmingham also had that policy in the 1960's although D2's had to be a least a mile long to qualify for a 40. They didn't have to be A roads though.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir? Big and complex.

That one was the victim of gradual nibbling away from the Gornal end, until it was too short to be useful. Shame, though.

I found just one little old repeater sign on the A411 around Borehamwood yesterday. I think it's this one, although the others on this stretch (including the one on the back) are all modern ones.

The column is the same one in the 2008 Streetview image; I'd make it 20-30 years old - but it's not unusual for repeater signs to be transferred from old columns to new when streetlights are replaced.
I noticed this somewhat strange 30 sign on Augustus Road near Birmingham the other day. Augustus Rd is 20, apart from the 100m or so section where Norfolk Road crosses. I assume it is there because Norfolk Rd is 30, not that you can ever go that fast on said road.
This Streetview shows a second one on the far side, but I didn't specifically spot that as I drove past today.
Oh, they're absolute beauties! Post-top mounted because they're double sided - the same sign has another face on the rear with a "40" sign.
Sad to report that this one has now gone, as the mainline speed limit has been reduced to 30!
I wonder whether they were just thrown in a skip?
Highly likely but they usually have a store and send metal in bulk for scrap, so if you're really desperate to find out ask your local authority DLO (directly, don't go through the council's contact centre, they won't have a clue what you want and will fob you off with H&S).
