Pre-Worboys or not?

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
Whatever happened to the requirement that all pre-Worboys signs had to be removed by 2005? Surely installing newly refurbished ones goes against that.
Not that I object to seeing new ones though.

How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

There is still one on a wall in Kirriemuir Angus at the junction of Bank Street/Kirk Wynd/Marywell Brae on the wall of a solictors office giving directions to Dundee and Forfar- I am not adept enough to bring up the pic from Google Earth - it is in a conservation area but whether that has helped it to remain is questionable.
Motorways travelled 2019 - M90 - M9 - M80 - M8 -M77 - M73 -A74(M) -M6-M42-M40 -A404(M) - M4 - M5 -M50 -M56 much better so far than last year

The same that happened to all the blue bordered ones going by 2015Truvelo wrote:Whatever happened to the requirement that all pre-Worboys signs had to be removed by 2005? Surely installing newly refurbished ones goes against that.

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
P please Bob, 100% official PW, place name sign ditto.
But that particular council has just remade a swathe of copies in that area which are nothing like PW as they use Transport or similar different fonts, brand new, and like all other modern copies do not depend on their ages but their designs, had they continued they would have carried on being made, but as they were before so if you can't tell them apart they count. Not that anyone's ever made one accurately but it is possible if they really want to.

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
That's horrible - they've taken the layout of a real sign but forced different amounts of text into it so the spacing and legibility is a complete mess. What a horrible rip-off of the real thing - no sign designer of a real pre-Worboys sign would have been happy with that!Big L wrote:There are some new lookalikes, too.
Plus it's partly in Arial. Ugh.

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
That's why I always separate council issued (designed at will) signs from national (all alike and required approval from government), just because councils follow national designs at times doesn't make the old ones pre-Worboys, especially when they announce the council name at the top and get the chief executive to endorse it.
No through roads were shared between both for reasons I do not know or understand, so we have the three line national version sharing with the one line council one which shared the font with the road name, which may have been the condition of doing so as an option now I think about it.

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
Rare as hen's teeth outside Scotland, plus the first I've seen with raised letters, 101% PW were that possible. Where is it? Who knows it may not be more than 50 miles from here?
Today's question from me, is it ever possible for a wooden sign to be official PW? My material says almost certainly not but someone may remember a real one. I found this today and the font and screwed on raised letters give away the age, but wood? It's a normal country road and been there a very long time, but wood?
Message to admin staff, I have been unable to embed Flickr photos since the weekend and have a growing queue, is there a problem on site?

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
I am 99% sure no genuine signs except temporary Worboys ones (some which are decades old around SW London) were ever made of wood. Maybe someone knows differently, but this is on a public road, uses screw on letters normally sold for house names, and is very old.
Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
Did not notice this until I was going through my pictures from yesterday.

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
That one's on Flickr, totally genuine and the only one known to survive, while I found the similar version with caution added. Basically if it uses the correct font and doesn't say 'private road' or 'Wimbledon council' etc as well then it's real.
Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
Style, perfect. Content highly dubious. All I know is since 1964 these were issued by councils and no two are the same, but were they standard before then?

Re: Pre-Worboys or not?
I forgot this one in Kingston, it's on the hospital road system and obviously not an official command but would one have appeared on a public road under special circumstances? I just saw a new one in Chiswick by a block of flats so are used on private roads at least.

I'm sure I've read that the speed limit on that stretch of road was reduced from 40 to 30 in recent years, so that sign must have been recycled from somewhere else.Big L wrote:40 sign in Wigan.
