M6 Preston Widening MRL6 Lighting

Post by Craig Evans »

Am i right in remembering from the early 90s (1993-1996) that there was also MRL6 lights temporarily installed on the M6 in Preston between Junction 29 at Bamber-Bridge and Junction 32 at Broughton when that section of M6 was being widened?

Unfortunately all of those MRL6 lights have gone from the central reservation of the M6 in Preston since 1997 but interestingly the SOX lighting still remains by the hard shoulder on the M6 in Preston.

The SOX at J32 has been replaced recently with MRL6s, along with the removal of half of the brackets in the central reserve now the southbound carriageway is 3 lanes.

I don't remember the lighting in person on the M6, but I can confirm the same columns with the GEC predecessor to the MRL6 was used before the widening works as I have a couple of photos of J30 pre-widening.

Isn't there a single SOX lantern still remaining at J32? Before the recent widening through the junction there were a bunch of MA60's to the north of the M55 bridges but I'm sure there's still one there.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

Nope, it's gone. There are a mix of ZX3s and MRL6s there now.

Update,
Lighting on the Southbound carriageway. Northbound lights have been removed. https://earth.app.goo.gl/heg2
Lighting on the M6 Preston Bypass is in poor state of repair.

Unfortunately that link seems to go to a Chrome-only web app and unlike the older Maps / Earth URL's the location isn't embedded in it.

In Google maps the equivalent URL is this.

ps looks like the 'new' Google Earth reached by your link is actually a wrapper for Google Maps!

Zooming out to the overhead view shows the OLDER Google Maps images not the newer ones from the standalone Google Earth program! :stir:

Most of the Preston Bypass now has a full night time switch off. It is rather different driving along an unlit D4 through there.

Maybe it's so the birds on the adjacent reserve at Samlesbury can get some sleep......
