Backlit signs are still the norm in Canary Wharf, alas GSV isn't. Canary Wharf Estate marked as a GSV free zone.

Coventry used to have that. Secret direction signs I believe. Also note A51 patched over presumably A423.

I suggest these were part time signals for use when there was something on at the Butts Arena, and they wanted to divert traffic into the city another way. No-one would normally go that way to get to the city centre.

In another thread, Mikeya has posted a link to a collection of old Manchester photos and Bryn has drawn attention to one showing these signs:

Wrinkly - thanks for posting the link as it was this thread I’d been looking for originally! Mikeya

Now gone.

There were others along that route, and even backlit No Chopsticks at the Southern End

No longer backlit but not removed when modern replacements were installed in front of them. Strange!

Also the temporary sign at J10 is still there on a tripod

Love the roundabout directions on the gantry signs, and bizarrely, pre-Warboys "30" signs even though the road was finished after the roll out of WB signs?

I seem to remember that new 30 signs with flat-topped 3's continued to be installed for some years. Although I'd seen diagrams of signs with round-topped 3's from about 1965, I don't think I saw an actual sign like that until about 1971.

There were a few flat topped 3s dotted around the Peak District until recently, & might still be.
