Those are very interesting, much like the Heathrow signs they are not just their own font but a different design from the official type made for LT premises. Oddly the best I've found is the pre-1950s no entry one way only white on red in the official format, only different as it uses their font. I've got a few of their standing speed limits which are totally different from the national designs, but the no entry is a direct copy.

I suspect this one in St Albans is council issued, but a nice one anyhow.

I think the first one's in the gallery already, but a road away appears to be the first sighting.

This is probably one of the oldest surviving direction signs, and as my father argues is on a public road entering a private road so may be considered official. I'm undecided but either way is a lovely antique.

Potters Bar, the first stand alone 'leading to' I've seen anywhere.

There are precious few of these around, with or without council logos.

This one's in Harperbury Hospital, which has at least three empty striped poles presumably carrying no entry or speed limit signs or the like, but not one has remained. Of course serif font could be used at will off the public roads but never looked right besides on road names.

Here's a rare road name/direction combo, normally they would be underneath. I don't think by any stretch could it be interpreted as pre-Worboys as it doubles as a road name which can't be, only directions to roads which have arrows on them do count.

I just found my first county boundary marker in Leverton, it turns out there are a number around but so small I hadn't spotted the others although I passed another one on the way here.

Spot the fault on this one

Imagesign2 by David Howard, on Flickr

Susan Wood is a very narrow road going off the A222 diagonally in Chislehurst, so has an arrow to point people in the right angle.

I presume roundabout name signs are part of road names but makes a change to find one (two here), there's also one in Watford but I lost it the second time I was there and looked for it.

Not sure if this No Entry sign counts for this thread, but here it is anyway:

It looks like the real PW deal from here, the wear and E look OK to identify it so can go in that thread as national.

It's hard to tell from that distance but the lettering looks a bit like the black vinyl stick-on letters you could buy in a hardware shop.

Some real ones now. First a hand painted effort

followed by what appears to be a real version, subtle but different

and a nice variation on a theme

There aren't that many of these left, there was one on the path I walked home from the bus stop for many years 'Footpath to Maurice Walk' on white on green. No photo of course. And unlike some council signs these were the same nationally plus their own optional versions. And three roads is even better, I saw it by chance in Carshalton.
