That looks like the original sign to me, if not it is still VERY old. Doesn't explain the giant protrusions above it though.Conekicker wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 20:22Top lighting? Pfft. Original concrete posts and arms to hold uplights (long since gone) and the remnant of a light baffle. The sign isn't the original and is now in much worse condition than the photo indicates.

Re: Manky Signs
Looking at the back of the sign there is a type of secondary framing that I haven't ever built even with concrete posts so probably predates me. The other arms of the junction appear to have original concrete posts but with more modern horizontal framing with lots of sub posts holding the larger revised signs and junction name in place.Bryn666 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2019 15:45That looks like the original sign to me, if not it is still VERY old. Re: Manky Signs
I saw this one today heading north on the A4229 at North Cornelly approaching junction 37 with the M4. The Streetview is from 19 months ago and it's deteriorated more since then.

Re: Manky Signs
Usually stickers, which fade reasonably quickly. Sometimes there are holes punched in for dates but the ink in the unpunched sections can fade, so you can't make out what the punched holes mean.crazyknightsfan wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 01:02 Do UK signs have dates engraved, stamped or stickered on the rear?
Patience is not a virtue - it's a concept invented by the dozy beggars who are unable to think quickly enough.
Re: Manky Signs
Despite being a requirement of CE and prior BS codes before 12899 came out, this still happens ridiculously frequently. France used to paint the dates on the back of their signs, and it is still legible today.Conekicker wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 18:59Usually stickers, which fade reasonably quickly. I love to use google map to find a cool thing.
Re: Manky Signs
Well spotted with the first one. Notice to the right the google car doesn’t go through the open gate towards Ferry road, Eastham with it being private. The gate is normally only closed at certain times of day to stop Vauxhall workers using it as a cut through. But they go down Power house rd which is also private but ungated. You can see the private road Manchester ship canal sign looking rather sorry for itself on the floor.roadsignfan wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 23:19 First is old M531 sign from Birkenhead

Re: Manky Signs
Yesterday I examined the backs of signs as well as the front. A few did indeed have such markings. Many more merely had the remains of markings weathered to illegibility or nothingness.Conekicker wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 18:59Usually stickers, which fade reasonably quickly. So apologies for any aspersions to sign designers, but my statement that I had never seen any such markings was technically accurate and likely to be confirmed by a small sample of signs!
Re: Manky Signs
According to PM it hasn't been the M531 since 1981, so that sign is probably over 40 years old. No wonder it's looking a bit scabby.roadsignfan wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 23:19 First is old M531 sign from Birkenhead

Re: Manky Signs
A couple of rather 'manky' signs. Firstly along the A574 Birchwood way and the other nearby at the junction with the A50. Both perhaps dating back to the early 1970s.

Re: Manky Signs
The M531 sign was replaced like for like a few years ago, so now we have a brand new M531 sign lingering on.roadsignfan wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 23:19 First is old M531 sign from Birkenhead

Oops thats a bit of a goof. Surely whoever authorised the new sign knows the area?Bryn666 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 20:42The M531 sign was replaced like for like a few years ago, so now we have a brand new M531 sign lingering on.roadsignfan wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 23:19 First is old M531 sign from Birkenhead

Re: Manky Signs
Local authorities have long since stopped caring I think. Old sign? Just replace it. Don't check it's actually right or not.

Re: Manky Signs
Methinks i need to go and capture that one next time i'm in the area. Even the tanker sign is a bit odd/rare.
