I didn’t manage to get those even though i’d passed them a few times. i’d say both signs could be the same age. maybe the brownish one on the other side of the road older. I had an excellent meal in ‘the grapes’ just round the corner.Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 20:53 A couple of manky - one especially so - signs for Maentwrog. That definitely looks quite new. Perhaps a like for like copy of a previous sign?Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 21:20 The next few signs were also SV links on my early posts and I asked Rambo if he photographed these when he was in the area last week. He didn't manage to get them so I said I'd try to do it.
This first one was a surprise as I'd only seen it briefly as I drove past heading in the opposite direction. I'd seen its counterpart more clearly at the top of the hill so was taken aback when I saw this one at close-quarters:

It's obviously a recently-made retroreflective plate but has had the old design printed. The sticker on the reverse seems fairly new:

Here are the pair of old 'Road joins from side' signs that were also SV links in an early post:

Re: Manky Signs
One of many old signs with visible rivets on this road - I didn't try to photograph every one. The red border on these signs has an almost metallic appearance when compared to the newer signs. This hasn't quite shown in this picture but was very apparent when looking at the actual signs.

Re: Manky Signs
Just glimpsed in the mirror whilst driving past, so a quick turn around and I was able to park in a layby and get the pic.
The sign is here https://maps.app.goo.gl/yRxK7uCXcnRgAJkv6
Looking at this again, it's possible that the sign is to indicate the road (layby?) from the house joining with the main road, I'm not too sure. Either way, I don't think that this is the correct sign to use, whether for the layby or the minor road ahead.
I've kept an eye out for these since Rambo posted the ones at the A55 Abergele junction. I'm assuming that this sign is for the very minor road that joins from the left just ahead but I thought that a standard right-angle sign (like those I've just posted above) would be correct; is this sign meant for merging roads rather than standard junctions? The sign is here https://maps.app.goo.gl/yRxK7uCXcnRgAJkv6

Re: Manky Signs
There are quite a few of those blue-bordered 'Maentwrog' signs all around there, the brownish one is about the mankiest and the other one was just convenient to get as I was walking past it anyway. I didn't bother trying to get them all. There are also a good few of the old green signs for Betws and Dolgellau at all the junctions around there - spoilt for choice!Rambo wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 21:29I didn’t manage to get those even though i’d passed them a few times. i’d say both signs could be the same age. maybe the brownish one on the other side of the road older. I parked right outside The Grapes, I'll have to keep it in mind for a meal on your recommendation (will you reimburse me if I'm not happy with it )

Re: Manky Signs
Almost certainly a like-for-like, I can't think of any other reason. I wonder why this one at the bottom of the hill was done like this but the old-style original sign at the top was left in place and a modern 17% sign added? Not that I want Gwynedd Council to remove the old sign!Rambo wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 21:30That definitely looks quite new. Re: Manky Signs
There are quite a few blue-bordered 'Hospital' signs in Ruthin but I just snapped this one

Another one that I posted previously just as a Streetview link.
A fairly normal blue-bordered sign plus an unusually-small one:

This is in the 'Rare Signs' thread for the topmost sign but the manky Pentre sign gets it in here, too:
Re: Manky Signs
There can't be too many of these around. I've only noticed a handful of these on my travels.Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 21:07 Manky and obsolete still standing in Ruthin

Don't see many of these old style 'roads merging' either. I've only passed here recently heading the other way so missed it. I'd guess by it's location that it is warning of the narrow lane just around the corner.Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 21:52 Just glimpsed in the mirror whilst driving past, so a quick turn around and I was able to park in a layby and get the pic.

Now we're talkin'!
I was capturing the old fingerpost across the road which still shows 'Railway Station' in Keswick when i stumbled across this opposite.

https://www.google.com/maps/@55.0168167 ... 384!8i8192 = some signs that has some letters missing; the one here is a silly sign as someone decided to to cover up the R and the V.
this could also fall under the botched cattogory.

Speaking of Keswick, there's a great old RCS on the A591 (on the wrong side of the road!) coming out of the town heading for Windermere and Ambleside. Unfortunately can't get a very good view of it on Google Earth!

Good spot. After doing a GSV reccy afterwards i noticed this https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.61102 ... authuser=0 also along the A591 but on the northern side of the A66.James1978 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 29, 2021 07:34 Speaking of Keswick, there's a great old RCS on the A591 (on the wrong side of the road!) coming out of the town heading for Windermere and Ambleside. I was in Harlech today and spotted some good ones.
First is this sign for Maentwrog which is/was dark blue-bordered but has weathered somewhat:

Re: Manky Signs
After snapping the above, I had a glance around for anything else of interest and spotted this across the street:
The reverse is also signed - and equally manky - but I think pretty redundant as it's not really visible to any pedestrians or traffic.
