A40(M)-S.JPG
A40(M) throwback in East Acton.
Does this fit the unholy trinity of botched, manky & out of date?
In the 1960s there were a lot of motorway numbers shown in green boxes, not convinced it was a botch per se but the regulations were very vague on how you wrote motorway numbers on ADSs back then.
The fact this has survived 20 years after the A40(M) died shows it's not a TfL sign!

It looks to me like it might be original because of the dark non-reflective green patches. Maybe lacking a blue patch gave it a stay of execution when all other the A40(M) signs were removed...
So how is (A5) a local destination? And the font looks wrong in a hard to pinpoint sort of way.
You'll like these, then - not only are there 2 (non-)local destinations on the sign, there are 3 signs altogether, some with visible rivets which makes them about 30+ years old, as Conekicker mentioned a few posts ago.
Also seen in some of the above images are one or two of the many old blue-bordered signs for Ysbyty Gwynedd. I've posted some before and mentioned that most of the hospital's signs - on the A55 junctions and around - seem to be of this style and vintage.

How about these for "local" destinations.
And as for having blue-bordered signs, there's hardly a junction in Inverness that doesn't have them.

Errr yes Inverness to Wick is stretching the definition of "local".

St Andrews Way, Leyland. The motorway patches look a bit odd too?
Motorway Permanent shouldn't be used on ADS signs like this - but you can tell it's old because it has the rounder brackets and not the slimmer modern motorway brackets. Good spot.

This one is showing its age in two ways. Firstly, the rivets are now obvious and it's lost its shine. Secondly, the designation "Middle Ring Road" is obsolete - it's now just the "Ring Road" since the outer one is no longer signed and the inner one has been partly closed and is also no longer signed.

This one and this one both have the word only patched over as they predate M5 J12 being full access (there are other old signs along the A38 but they mostly say M5 South).
Also on the A38 approaching the Metz Way lights is this. The airport hasn't been officially been called Staverton for nearly 30 years and there is also an worn away 40 repeater underneath.

"Southbound only" seems a ridiculous way of signing it anyway - just put "M5 South" like normal people!

I've passed that one a few times recently, Rambo, and noticed it (and the one on the other carriageway) was a bit faded and, to me, just looked an old design - has this type been superseded?
I was out at the weekend and passed about a million signs that would be candidates for this thread: manky, faded, old, light-blue and dark-blue borders. I'll try and find some StreetView links but, in the meantime, the one that was easiest to find is https://maps.app.goo.gl/5SD5yjpExswkP4i77 I don't know if it's been posted before but it must be one of the largest blue-bordered signs around.

Ah that is quite a large one and shouldn't be blue blue bordered either! I've been to Whitchurch quite a few times but never approached the A49 on that road. As for the merging sign, i think modern ones show priority with a 'thinner' and 'thicker' part. the 'thicker' bit being the A55 mainline. This became obsolete in 1975? that would fit because Sabre wiki dates the Abergele bypass being built in the late 60's so could be original to the dual carriageway being built.
