Some of the numbers are hardly visible on this sign which has since been replaced.

The 50 sign in the first photo looks brand new in the image taken two years earlier. Amazing it has deteriorated so quickly.

These two near me in Hawkinge.

Interestingly, if you turn the "camera" 180 degrees you will see an old "Elham Rural District" road name sign with that text painted over, but still visible.

While driving along the A556 recently just south of Northwich i was surprised at how shoddy some of the signage is especially for a high quality primary route / dual carriageway.
Here's a few examples
Non existant NSL repeater https://www.google.com/maps/@53.2501886 ... 312!8i6656
and here https://www.google.com/maps/@53.2501356 ... 312!8i6656

Although not too bad here this has deteriorated somewhat since GSV went past https://www.google.com/maps/@53.2503305 ... 312!8i6656

Blue bordered which has aged ok compared to some other newer examples https://www.google.com/maps/@53.2502102 ... 312!8i6656

Not all that uncommon there is also a strange mix of old and new signs together https://www.google.com/maps/@53.2503121 ... 312!8i6656

and https://www.google.com/maps/@53.2461005 ... 312!8i6656

I find it hard to believe that the blue bordered sign was erected over 25 years ago.

Do you think that in some instances councils have procured new blue bordered signs after 1994 just to keep things uniform. although in this example a later green patch version has appeared underneath so not very uniform. i agree though its in remarkable condition.

A quick peruse of various OS maps seems to indicate that the road to the left only became the A689 (previously B6293) in around 1971. Britain's oldest plated sign?

So the previous set up would probably have been:

Town Centre
Barnard Castle
B6277
Stanhope
(B6293)

And if Cummings saw that sign he'd have probably decided his vision was shot to pieces.

It's not clear from the picture but the wording on this specimen says 'Swimming pool' and refers to St Augustine's pool which closed in 1997

'Ring Road 1' is also rather unusual...

Spacing is wrong, it should be "Ring Road 1", it's a distance to the ring road (A147 I believe).

Nothing to do with being 'manky', but the residents of Bradford can rest assured that all of their signage is secure!

As I drove into the city today, I stopped at a set of lights on the A650. The boredom of my wait on red was alleviated by getting to watch a guy (whose works van was parked rather awkwardly in the middle of the junction) walk around testing all of the signs by virtue of putting one hand on them and giving them a tug and a shove. None of them seemed to give any movement when he did so, so they are presumably all okay.

These caught my eye in Knutsford last week. The route numbers even before a556 work seem well out of date. Despite the the recent A556 work it seems Knutsford has missed out on new signage as this isn't the only one that is manky / out of date.
