Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
When i lived in Peterborough, there was a sign in East Lincs that directed people to Mavis Enderby and Old Boligbroke
However an addition made it read
TO Old Bolingbroke and Mavis Enderby
A Son

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
In the mid 90s, there was a sign on the A39 Truro to Carland Cross road (before it was widened and partially re-routed) to the hamlet of Ennis which had a P added to the front. By someone evidently not over- keen on the niceties of perfect spelling.
Ten years earlier I was into a certain American thrash metal band and, to my subsequent shame, onevdrunken night added an S to the beginning of all the signs in Colchester's Layer Road.

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
It has been cleaned off now, but for a long time one of the direction signs for the Berry Hill industrial estate in Droitwich was changed to Benny Hill.

Could have been a reference to Dennis Pennis?Bertiebus wrote:In the mid 90s, there was a sign on the A39 Truro to Carland Cross road (before it was widened and partially re-routed) to the hamlet of Ennis which had a P added to the front. Good job I don't live in Yorkshire. My 13 month old son would go crazy over that!Big Nick wrote:I saw this one in the Yorkshire Dales...

There's a road round the corner from me called BRUCE WAY.
Every now and then someone adds NE to WAY.

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
North of Peterculter on the B979 to Westhill, direction sign at junction to Contlaw is regularly tippex-ed & on A93 at Milltimber near B979 Stonehaven junction there is a lane called 'Belenden Walk'. About 15 years ago some wag altered sign at the opening.
Whilst the modification was the usual puerile stuff, I was more impressed that the perpetrator had managed to peel off the lettering & re-arrange it on a sign that was then over 20 years old. This went un-noticed by the powers that be for many months before being rectified. However a sheep warning sign on the back road from Nethy Bridge to the A939 Grantown- Tomintoul road had a stick man made from black tape performing an illeagal act saying 'Oh yeah!', which remained for all to see for over a period of 3 years. Jolly japes indeed.

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
Not a road sign but the GWR used to have an engine named COMET. At some point in the 1950's someone embellished the name on the side of the loco to read "INCOMETAX"!
