Unauthorised changes to signs

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
There used to be an ELM CLOSE right next to the main entrance/exit road from my school.
A couple of swipes with a thick permenant market and you have BUM CLOSE. In the end, people gave up fighting to keep it 'clean'.

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
Up to a point, but in this case the "old Welsh name" had fallen into complete and utter disuse, to the extent that *no-one* remembered it, and someone had to go back to ancient documents to find it. If you're going to do that, then we might as well start to resurrect old Anglo-Saxon and Norse names and put them on the modern signs for English villages. And I think most of us would agree that that would be a complete waste of money.Jam35 wrote:But a Welsh sign should be in a high register of Welsh. I know people often say things such as Menai Brij, but the sign should still read Porthaethwy (as it does). Abandoning the literary language just leads to the Bargoed/Bargod silliness, where a wholly unremarkable dialectal feature finds its way onto signs as "the Welsh name". Llanoronwy is good literary Welsh, the sort that people should be encouraged to write.

We are still using old AS/Norse names to be honest - they've just evolved.Chris Bertram wrote:We might as well start to resurrect old Anglo-Saxon and Norse names and put them on the modern signs for English villages. And I think most of us would agree that that would be a complete waste of money.
Mention places like Birmingham or Whitby to people who've been dead for over 1000 years and they'll probably have an idea of where you're on about.
They might even be able to tell you who Beorma was....

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
I remember, for a while this sign had the B and T removed. Always made me smile whe passing.
Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
For many months until recently this sign had its meaning virtually inverted by removal of the last 'e'.
Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
In Cornwall about 10 to 15 years ago any Brown Tourist sign which had an English Heritage embelm or English Tourist board embelm was blacked out and the symbol of the cornish flag (white cross on black backgorund) was painted on the sign instead. It seems Cornwall CC and HA have given up as, the signs now are just brown signs without any emblems.

I'm sure the chances of Cornwall gaining any sort of autonomy let alone independence are next to zero.

Passed it today and one of the signs had been changed to a T.Lonewolf wrote:Theres a place not too far from here called Shilbottle, needless to say the signs are regularly defaced
I know it's not correct but wouldn't capitalised direction signs be worth considering to deter vandalism?

The stop sign at this junction at Hill Wootton just outside Leamington Spa has been altered to say "DON'T STOP BELIEVING"...

Re: Unauthorised changes to signs
Someone's obviously got a little point to make here on the B5358. A local direction sign which used to say "< Prestbury 1" has been modded to a place name for Prestbury.

This sign in South Wales has got to be one of the best cases of vandalism ever. It's pretty well done too.
