Fractions on Route Confirmation Signs

Post by Stellar Forces »

As a child, I remember the A444 Bedworth Bypass just after the M6 J3 having an odd route confirmation sign. It listed Nuneaton (can't remember how far, but the town centre must be about 5 miles from there?) and Burton-upon-Trent, which was signed as 29 3/4 miles. Unfortunately, after a trawl on Street View, the sign appears to have been removed.

What I was wondering is: is a distance on a Primary route on a route confirmation sign often given to the exact fraction? I can't think of many examples, certainly none that are 29 3/4 miles away. Anyone got a larger number listed as a fraction on a Primary route?

According to my copy of the Traffic Signs Manual (may not be the latest):
Fractions, to the nearest quarter of a mile, may be used for distances less than three miles. Distances over 3 miles must be rounded to the nearest mile. On motorway route confirmatory signs all distances must be to the nearest mile.

On the A14 Cambridge bypass, westbound, the distance to the M11 Girton Interchange is given as fractions. From memory, it's shown as 2 1/2 miles from the A10 Milton junction.

The A92 just after the Forgan roundabout had a sign that read 3 1/4 miles. When I was younger, I had this worrying notion that it meant 314 miles. It's now been replaced by a sign that reads 3 miles.

On another note, I went to see if streetview had the old sign available but instead, I found this.

And that's probably the least the horse transporter has ever held up traffic.

Also, this doesn't look like a particularly safe way of working on a deceleration lane on a trunk road.

Ha yeah, I mind that, the polis van hadn't got there when I shot round on the wee inverdovat road.

That also explains where the StFort horse box has gone...

My colleague is standing on the nearside verge and our Survey Van is on the slip outside the petrol station.
The side door on the horse box came undone, and hit the crash barrier, spinning the horse box around.
It was properly wrecked.

The funny thing about that sign is that it is rather more than 2.5 miles to the centre of Letchworth from that location.

That one has escaped the patching, unlike its counterpart a little to the east.

Those must be recent guidelines as there are plenty of route confirmation boards across the UK which use fractions of a mile on distances well about 3 miles.

Which seemed odd, why did they do one and not the other, mind you, most of the signage needs renewing on that stretch anyway.....
