Ha ha ha after posting this I drove past a pair yesterday on the A17. Now I've done the A17 millions of times so either they're new....or I just wasn't looking before

I'd be surprised if you've never passed any until recently. They're very common. Here's two on a bit of road I think you know very well indeed...

And worse, there is a freight yard behind some trees in that very stretch of road that I've actually worked from

There was a purge of these in Newcastle about twenty years ago. They were replaced by standard lights of the "salmon pink" variety on black poles.

Having said that they do seem to be making a comeback in modern form for new islands.
