The original Beany blocks measure much further front to back than the ones in those pictures:

The main problem with Beanys and the like is jetting them clean. The holes don't really let the jethead get a good "grip" in the run so it can take forever to clean them out.
Patience is not a virtue - it's a concept invented by the dozy beggars who are unable to think quickly enough.

Yeah, we had to place special rubber mats over the holes to stop all the muck blasting out and injuring people.
The other problem I tend to see is these are more prone to being crushed by lorry tyres etc

IME that is a big problem at curves & kinks where they try to straightline the approaches to roundabouts etc. When they built the new A16 near me they did the connecting roundabout first and coned it down to a straight through path while there was no turning to make, all the kerbs were ruined before it was ready to actually open as an actual roundabout. Once it was actually used as a roundabout the heavies are entering it slower and can more easily make the turns without overrunning the kerbs (although after 7 years there are a couple of sections that have gone).

Who's done the Autotrack fiddle then where kerbs are crushed?

5mph entry speed clearly!

In my humble opinion - maintenance is the key.
Otherwise you get a "sludge trap" which works invisibly (from new) for three years, then dumps a pond onto the road surface just as winter (and ice) arrives.

I wonder whether Doncaster has cleaned out its road drainage gullies in the past ten years, which were the cause of the flooding in summer 2007?

The drain in this picture led to a pipe that was about 600 mm in diameter. The outlet from the drain was on the far side of the road beyond the "STOP" sign. As children, we used to "explore" these drains. According to Google Earth, this road descended 10 metres in 220, giving a 4.5% gradient.

As a lay person I had absolutely no idea those holy kerbs contained such a deep and capacious drainage channel.
If highway engineers made all their knowledge public, anyone and everyone would be able to apply for those jobs with their fabulous salaries !

If you really believe that then why are you worrying about being a highways engineer when after one conversation you could be an astronaut?

I don't think one conversation would be quite enough - for either role
