Australian street lighting

Post by booshank »

Australia seems to have some distinctive street lighting, especially posts with what look like over-sized arms. I didn't get any photos of those but here are some on the main street of Babinda, a small town just off the Bruce Highway in far north Queensland.

Historically, like Canada, they also used a lot of 'British' lanterns.

The Eleco installation reminds me of the A62 between Marsden and Slaithwaite in the 1980's.

They're still hanging on I believe. They were last year anyway.

I always love spotting an old British-style lamp in a foreign country, like this one in Malta:

That lantern is ubiquitous in Australia and i think lighting is very similar in New Zealand

Several years ago I spotted these British style lanterns in California. It's possible they are both the same lantern.

I recall seeing something that looked like a thorn alpha 4 south of San Jose

A few years ago I visited Macau, not that that I saw any British streetlights while I was there, however before I went I found a book of old photos of the former Portuguese colony and it seemed that almost every street scene had GEC Clearmain lanterns present. I've just found online some 1970s/80s photos here, here and here which quite clearly show some examples.

They had those in Singapore. When I was there in 1981, most lanterns appeared to be US types and some that I also saw in France. It seems now they use lanterns that are used typically in Balfour Beatty PFI projects.
