Fascinating photostream on Flickr

Post by Mikeya »

Hello all

Some of you may be interested in an amazing set of images posted on Flickr by Manchester Archives - taken by Manchester City Council's photographers in the 1960s they show the city on the cusp and during a period of serious change. There are thousands of images - somewhat unsorted - but worth a trawl for street scene, street lighting and road signs and even trolleybus overhead in its dying days int he city. Worth a look. I'll post a couple of links to show the subject!

This is absolutely fascinating ... thousands of images just waiting to be viewed.

After a few minutes looking I found this, according to a caption it is Princess Parkway as S4 and posted as NSL ... possibly from 1954, I'd take a guess at maybe somewhere around Platt Fields area ...

This is a suitable time to remind people about the announcement regarding copyright and SABRE.

Please link to images rather than downloading them and uploading them to SABRE, thereby causing SABRE to be liable against copyright laws.

Sorry, I didn't see any copyright markers and having read the homepage for the resource I was genuinely under the impression the images were for public consumption and sharing.

A very rural looking setting on the A560 near Timperley, note the sign for the M6:-

I found some photos that show trolleybus furniture, but none yet of the vehicles. There are a few around this one showing the overhead lines.

Looking at a lot of these photos I can see where the expression "it's grim up North" comes from ! I suppose being B&W photos makes a lot of places look awful.

After quite a lot of looking I've finally found a photo with a trolleybus in it but the vehicle is moving away from the camera and is somewhat blurred:
