These street lights still exist on the A69 into Newcastle, quite an achievement as they were erected in 1975-76. However, it's a case of how long as LED is rapidly taking over, and in Cumbria, SOX is dying out quickly.scott125 wrote:Around Glasgow theres still loads of Thorn Alpha 4sRobert Kilcoyne wrote:A couple of Thorn Alpha 4's on the A45 at The Swan Island in Birmingham. Never thought Thorn Alphas were as old as that , early 80s at a push.Glenn A wrote:These street lights still exist on the A69 into Newcastle, quite an achievement as they were erected in 1975-76. These are the lights closer to the Denton Roundabout, but as you pass the junction for Throckley they change to Thorn Alpha 4s. All of these lights date back to the seventies.scott125 wrote:Do you mean these ? https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.98621 ... 6656?hl=enGlenn A wrote:These street lights still exist on the A69 into Newcastle, quite an achievement as they were erected in 1975-76. Saw them when I went up to Newcastle. I go up a fair bit as I have some family up there and prefer it over places like London.Glenn A wrote:These street lights still exist on the A69 into Newcastle, quite an achievement as they were erected in 1975-76. Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
Happy New Year.
I have a question for those who live in the Calder Valley. There is a junction at Salterhebble on the A629. I use to go on there a lot. I have a few questions, are the MA50's still there? I also noticed what seems to be the remains of a building covered in graffiti, and I'm wondering what was there before? I know there was trouble with some local graffiti artists there after the government put railings around it and they have been using it for many years. I'm just curious as I can't remember off the top of my head.

I can see the spot you mean on GSV, but I can't say it has ever really struck me while on the road so I can't recall what might have been there before. There was a rather nice Tetley pub, the Calder & Hebble, that was lost when the junction was widened, but that was on the other side of the road - in fact, I thought it was in the triangle enclosed by the A629, A6026 and B6112? I visited a few times in the mid 80's when I moved to Calderdale.Divine wrote:Happy New Year.

They aren't original on these posts, they replaced older lamps which I believe were Incandescent.scott125 wrote:I often wonder how old the lanterns are , i dont think they are original .Robert Kilcoyne wrote:This is a classic Scottish concrete column with top entry lantern, hopefully it is still there:-Divine wrote:

Interesting. I've noticed the MA50'S went. They were replaced with Arcs. The last time I went down there was 3-4 years ago and I never payed attention. I do remember MA50's there though.FleetlinePhil wrote:I can see the spot you mean on GSV, but I can't say it has ever really struck me while on the road so I can't recall what might have been there before. Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
I can remember the MA50's on concrete columns at the A629 /A6026 / B6112 junction. The A629 was lit by MA50's from the Ainley Top roundabout to its junction with the A6026 until the lighting on the dual carriageway section (Calderdale Way) was converted to Arcs.Divine wrote: Interesting. Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
Yeah, in 03' I remember Ainley top to the junction having MA50's and a few other SOX fittings. Do you know what was at the graffiti spot at the A629/A6026/B6112 junction?Robert Kilcoyne wrote:I can remember the MA50's on concrete columns at the A629 /A6026 / B6112 junction. Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
It was a sad day when this road near where I once lived, and still relatively close, was upgraded to Arcs a few years back: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.58727 ... 312!8i6656
I remember going down there when there were Alpha 9's, Alpha 4's, MA60's and a Davis/Elco GR100. Sad really, to say I took these into account when I was 3/4 (Not awfully long ago). Most were on their original concrete posts!

Re: SOX street lights, which areas still have them?
Most of the fittings have been there since the 60's/70's and 80's and some in the 90's/00's, but replaced Incandescent and the few Mercury lights to exist in Glasgow.scott125 wrote:I thought so though there certainly elderlyDivine wrote:They aren't original on these posts, they replaced older lamps which I believe were Incandescent.scott125 wrote:
