Most Motorways mentioned on 1 sign?

Post by drpsg »

7 Motorways mentioned on this sign near M25 J21a. Anyone know of a sign with more on? Maybe one with the M23 as well as these?

No place appears on more signs than London, so it's likely that London will return the favour and sign more roads than anywhere else. It is, as we all know, the centre of the tarmac universe.

What I'm saying is that if it is possible to match or beat seven, that region of the M25 is going to be the best place to look.

Some other regional hubs of the motorway network:

Bristol (I think M5/M49 northbound gives you those two plus M48 and M4, but not M32)

Doncaster (I've always thought the A1(M)'s exit for "M18 (M1, M62, M180)" has more motorway numbers at a single motorway exit)

Manchester (a few former motorways are signed too!)

Liverpool (I don't think the M53 is signed until you're through the tunnel which is a shame. As a child I thought '(M6, M62, M58)' was an impressive out of city destination)

West Midlands (M5, M6, M42, M40, M54, M1 and A38(M) offer a potential of seven, but you're not going to get them all in one. Throw in Coventry for the M45 too!)

Preston

Glasgow

long edit because I got carried away thinking of more regional hubs

On and around the M60 there are some signs with lots of motorways and a notoriously large number of destinations, but I doubt there's one with seven motorways. Even this pair, joining the motorway network from the airport, only manages six.

I used to find it strange how routes out of Liverpool are signed "(M6, M62, M57)". Unfortunately I don't think the M53 is signed until you're through the tunnel but you might be able to find a good one on the M60.
https://goo.gl/maps/mVygLTjcwZx near Simister Island - M60, M62, M6, M61, M66. no M56, M67 or M602 though. Unfortunately no M63 any more either.
Also https://goo.gl/maps/AbK4qUWEpTR2 with M60, M62, M61, M602, M66. Coming in from M602 swops M6 for M602, still no M56 mentioned.

I spent too long on my post. Interesting that M67 is mentioned on that one. Wonder if 15 years ago it mentioned M63 and M66.

In the old days that gantry wasn't there at all.

However there used to be signs saying "For x y and z follow Stockport (M63)" as originally Stretford and Stockport were the only M63 primary destinations.

The best I can do is 6 here, which doesn't answer your question.

The M6 Toll would make it 7 but that doesn't count as it isn't mentioned till the next sign ahead.

I can remember its exact words. It said
Follow

Warrington for Liverpool
Rochdale for Leeds
Stockport for Sheffield
(The 3 lines may not have been in exactly that order). That slightly reduced the number of destinations to be mentioned on the immediately following map-type sign.

Just the 6 on this one at Dartford, it gains the M23 but loses the M3, M4 and M40!

M25 (M3, M23, M20) (M40, M1) M4
M25 (M3, M23, M20) (M4, M40, M1)

Unfortunately you might not regard them as one sign. But I think this is the right area.

EDIT: Another seven on one sign

Having been looking at M25 junctions on GSV, on the A roads, there doesn't seem to consistency about signposting of the M4, M40, M3, M11 on Green A road signs (or on the M25 itself e.g https://goo.gl/maps/wN4u5fjGoX72). Anyone got any ideas if this is just down to each authority or if there's a set of standards/regulations about what roads/motorways are put on?
Edit - Just found this one https://goo.gl/maps/8RngibEzgBp that has the A1(M) on (other approach is similar https://goo.gl/maps/4jAEdUsEvPR2 ! If we're putting the M23 on, then why leave off the M40 and M3? Having spent too much time on GSV, the M4 seems to be on a lot of signposts, but the M40 doesn't get that many mentions (e.g https://goo.gl/maps/xU6YApvRngs has all except the M40). So does a full set of 8 exist? M25, M1, M11,M20 M3, M23, M4, M40 (extra bonus for M2 and A1(M) included).

I think it is due to the five "control" destinations on the M25 - Heathrow (M4), Watford (M1), Harlow/Stansted (M11), Dartford/Maidstone (M20) and Gatwick (M23). Every sign on the M25 will refer to the next one of these five. The M3, M40, A1(M) and M26 are secondary destinations so tend not to appear on signs until a junction or two away.

It doesn't break the record for the number of signposted motorways, but I've always liked this sign in Belfast, which indicates "The NORTH", "The WEST" and "The SOUTH" (i.e. pretty much everywhere in NI apart from Bangor, Newtownards and Belfast city centre) all as the same forward destination.

Reminds me of this sign near Middlesbrough & no motorways

Here's six on the A38(M) approach to Spaghetti Junction (M1, A38(M), M5, M6, M40, M42). I doubt that's likely to be beaten in the area.

I've found video footage of the sign - unfortunately very blurry but I've managed to recreate it.

Sorry to reply to a 10-month-old post that was a reply to a 3-year-old post, but I've just come across yours.

The specific sign I remember had all 3 destination pairs on one sign, and nothing else.

It may be that your sign and mine were part of the same signing system - mine first, then yours for the right lane and a matching one for the left lane. Or alternatively, yours and mine may be from different periods.
