Whereas Catterick has a sign banning tanks and other tracked military vehicles. I've never seen that anywhere else.
I always like the way signs in Glossop pointing to Sheffield add "via Snake Pass" so you know what you're letting yourself in for. Sensible but unusually informative in my experience.

Re: Rare Roadsigns
Direct from Glossop? I would be genuinely interested to know how many trains actually offered that service. I would have been tempted to say "none" if it were not for a very vague recollection of seeing a picture of a Class 77 (EM2) at Glossop working what was described as a semi-fast Manchester - Sheffield service. Even if that was the case, it would be 35 years (at least) before the period I was working there. You might think news of the closure would have sunk in by then, but that may be giving the local population too much credit: when I pointed out to one disappointed potential customer that there was not a direct railway line to Sheffield, his answer was "Why not? There's a road, isn't there?"jimboLL wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 14:12Well there was, and for many people there ought still to be.FleetlinePhil wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 13:55It was staggering how many people believed (in 2006/7) that there was a direct rail route from Glossop to Sheffield!Chris Bertram wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 13:12 Well, there is an alternative route to Sheffield from Glossop, via Woodhead.
It is noteworthy that there has been no proper bus service over to Sheffield either in my recollection, barring summer Sunday leisure connections.

Re: Rare Roadsigns
Even when the passenger service was in operation over the Woodhead line I wasn't have thought there were many direct trains from Glossop to Sheffield, as it would have involved swapping the locomotive from one end of the train to the other at Glossop.FleetlinePhil wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 20:02Direct from Glossop? I presume the easiest way was to get an EMU from Glossop to either Dinting or Hadfield & then catching a Manchester - Sheffield train.

Sure enough the day I drove that road there was a squadron of Challenger tanks noisily firing at targets on the range.
Gradual gunfire?!

Re: Rare Roadsigns
Whilst Dinting would seem to be the logical connection point, I believe some Manchester - Sheffield trains called at Hadfield until their ending in 1970, which would be an easier connection in the Sheffield direction as you would not need to change platforms. Also, the Glossop branch platform at Dinting is on a very sharp curve, with quite alarming stepping distances.RichardA626 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 20:25Even when the passenger service was in operation over the Woodhead line I wasn't have thought there were many direct trains from Glossop to Sheffield, as it would have involved swapping the locomotive from one end of the train to the other at Glossop.FleetlinePhil wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 20:02Direct from Glossop? However, I don't think train frequency would have been that great in those days. Presumably it was at least possible to commute for a 9-5 job, I would hope.

Re: Rare Roadsigns
This is a road sign I've never seen anywhere else, though I'm sure someone will give me other examples in places I've never visited.
I've no idea what the penalty would be if you went down there and didn't access any of the premises, but I'd guess that in the daytime no one would be bothered, but it means anyone driving around an industrial estate in the evenings or at weekends will look suspicious.

Further to your previous replies, I note that work started this week on building a new heliport for Penzance in Jelbert Way. https://penzanceheliport.co.uk/building ... -heliport/
So I guess quite close to the old one. It's due to open next year. Perhaps these signs are pending a comeback in this area?

It would be enforced in the same manner as any other traffic restriction with an exemption for access.Octaviadriver wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 16:35 This is a road sign I've never seen anywhere else, though I'm sure someone will give me other examples in places I've never visited.

I wonder if it's trying to resolve some kind of parking issue, as the road wouldn't be useful for any other purpose besides accessing premises.

Re: Rare Roadsigns
I'd be surprised if there were any parking issues as there's lots of parking at each site and the the main road on the industrial estate has parking bays on both sides for most of its length. I sometimes go down there to collect items I've won online with John Pye Auctions and there's always plenty of parking space. If you were stopped during normal working hours to check if you're accessing off street premises, there're a couple of cafes that you could say you're going to visit.Glen wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 15:05It would be enforced in the same manner as any other traffic restriction with an exemption for access.Octaviadriver wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 16:35 This is a road sign I've never seen anywhere else, though I'm sure someone will give me other examples in places I've never visited.

If you go down a small road on the other side of this industrial estate, there's another sign I don't recall seeing anywhere else.

Re: Rare Roadsigns
The fact that there are on street parking bays may be why there has been a problem with parking by vehicles which are not accessing any premises and also why parking restrictions would be impractical.Octaviadriver wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 15:59 I'd be surprised if there were any parking issues as there's lots of parking at each site and the the main road on the industrial estate has parking bays on both sides for most of its length. It doesn't look to be an adopted road.

This sign a few yards before the sound your horn sign is also in English only.

I'm not sure if this is a private road here as there's a barrier to close off the road before you reach these signs, though it clearly hasn't been closed for years. As soon as you go under the bridge, there's a sign saying it's private property, though the Google Streetview car has continued on and ignored the sign.

Re: Rare Roadsigns
I just posted the streetview link to the sign in the Favourite Unclassified thread. But does the warning plate Impassable at times exist anywhere else? Certainly not at Bosham which was my obvious first thought. Shore Road there has the warning Road floods at each high tide. So are both of these unique? If not, both must be extremely rare.

The best I can come up with is "Road impassible during high tide" here.

This sign seems to have changed between 2011 and 2016

Further along the road there are slightly odd non-standard signs as a reminder for pedestrians.

And finally there is this beauty!

The ban makes sense now and there's evidence on the road that there's been a late night car cruise.Big Nick wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 00:06I wonder if they've had trouble with late night car cruises - all those souped up motors, tyre burnouts, loud music, drink and drug driving, drag races down the main stretch etc?Octaviadriver wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 16:35 This is a road sign I've never seen anywhere else, though I'm sure someone will give me other examples in places I've never visited.

I'm sure if you go along there for a nosey in the middle of the day and didn't go into anywhere, no one would bat an eyelid or check up to see if you were accessing any of the premises.
