When did mileages in brackets on route confirmation signs become defunct?
On a recent trip in Cornwall I noticed this sign
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.45529 ... 312!8i6656
Obviously it is of some age, but it got me thinking, I cannot recollect newish signs having the mileage in brackets?
Tell me I'm wrong, if not when did this system stop?

Also, does anyone know when, and why, the edict was issued to cover up quarter-mile distances beyond 3 miles on RCBs?

Hi!
The requirement for distances to be shown to the nearest mile at 3 miles and above became mandatory in the 1994 TSRGD, however it was recommended in the 1975 and 1981 versions but not compulsory!
One or two councils had an "unofficial" policy of measuring and signing in ½ mile intervals above 3 and less than 15 miles, with whole miles above that, but this was not stated in TSRGD!
There used to be a sign pointing down Wyresdale Road in Lancaster that said "Clitheroe 26¼ (Via Trough of Bowland)", but if replaced nowadays it would simply state "Clitheroe 26" or omit the distance altogether!

Thank you for the information Chris.
Out of interest, do you know why this decision was taken?

All the destinations on this RCS near Brampton in Cumbria are in brackets:-

And it must be the only RCB which lists three destinations which are over 100 miles away.

Preventing needless clutter. At the national speed limit a fraction of a mile makes a negligible impact on journey times over 3 miles so it makes sense to not bother.Rillington wrote: ↑Thu Oct 04, 2018 18:18 Thank you for the information Chris.
