Why does this bus stop have a solar panel on it?
In the Forest of Dean near to the bike centre Cannock Road and the main a road there is a bus stop but it's unusual in that it has a solar panel on it if anyone could tell you what the solar panel was for that would be great here it is on Google Maps:

Your link is broken, try this - https://www.google.com/maps/@51.8288738 ... 312!8i6656Tom Williams wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 17:22 In the Forest of Dean near to the bike centre Cannock Road and the main a road there is a bus stop but it's unusual in that it has a solar panel on it if anyone could tell you what the solar panel was for that would be great here it is on Google Maps:
My first guess is it was for a light on the bus stop but I can't see one unless it's built into the pole.
Could you stop there and have a closer look? Should be easy to spot a light in the winter evenings!
It could be a 'Green Initiative' to increase the councils power supply from renewable sources but the input would be negligible.

That sounds like a council Green Initiative then.

It’s usually so the timetable can be backlit during darkness there’s usually a button to light it up when needed

We always go past it when we go for a ride in the forest, won't be able to see it for a while as I've just had an operation with a long recovery period so maps is the only way I can show itBig Nick wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 18:14Your link is broken, try this - https://www.google.com/maps/@51.8288738 ...

Quite a few rural stops around York have solar panels on them to power a light above to light up the stop in the dark, it’s a very cost effective and allows the bus drivers to see if people are waiting at the stop, quite a few bus shelters in Leeds have solar panels on top to power the lights inside, either way it saves on electric.

There are quite a few in the Poole and Bournemouth area too, they are made by a company called Trueform.NICK 647063 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 20:03 Quite a few rural stops around York have solar panels on them to power a light above to light up the stop in the dark, it’s a very cost effective and allows the bus drivers to see if people are waiting at the stop

Not only saves on electricity but if the solar panel and battery are sufficient could mean that no mains electric cabling would be needed at all - which is doubtless an even bigger saving.NICK 647063 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 20:03 Quite a few rural stops around York have solar panels on them to power a light above to light up the stop in the dark, it’s a very cost effective and allows the bus drivers to see if people are waiting at the stop, quite a few bus shelters in Leeds have solar panels on top to power the lights inside, either way it saves on electric.

They're often used to power the real time arrivals info screens at bus stops here.

My solar fairy lights haven't been fairing well in the current gloom - look at it 9.45am and it's not light! They'd been shutting off at about 6pm. Put them into low power mode, at least they stay on now, but don't look that great!

If the fairy lights have batteries, they are probably reaching end of life. Batteries don't have infinite recharges, although it is tempting to think otherwise.Mark Hewitt wrote: ↑Thu Nov 22, 2018 09:43 My solar fairy lights haven't been fairing well in the current gloom - look at it 9.45am and it's not light! Doubtful as it's less than 3 months old.Little Owl wrote: ↑Fri Nov 23, 2018 14:33If the fairy lights have batteries, they are probably reaching end of life.
