How old are these streetlights?

Post by Big Nick »

The History of Epping page on Facebook is asking when a particular style of streetlight was installed. Naturally I thought of you guys!

I'm saying it was 1950s and I recall them being there in the 1980s. Current view is here - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.70329 ... 6656?hl=en

These rather ornate concrete standards probably date back to the 1950s. This type of street lighting was popular in the 1950s and early 1960s before concrete standards became more basic.

Yes, definitely mid century. Those were among the first generation concrete. The top entry mercury lantern may also be original but this isn't 100% certain.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

These seemed to spring up on Tyneside, although the " swan's neck" doesn't have the holes, in the 1950s and lasted until the 1990s on some roads.
