Doesn't look official, but it seems to be yet another obstacle warning sort of thing.

I've seen another one which is a clearer picture, it's here:

I assume the locals have put them there to stop drivers crashing there in the dark. In the first example, you've got a road ending at a T-junction after a small hill with no street lighting. The second, you've got a wall jutting out, narrowing the verge as the road curves - again in an area with little lighting.

Guess the owners were tired of rebuilding their garden wall!

Are those red circles in every black and white square supposed to be there? It is difficult to tell whether they are just stickers, but notice that the circles in the black squares are slightly larger than the circles in the white squares. That along with the fairly regular spacing between the circles would suggest that they are not stickers but are in fact part of the sign. They definitely do not seem to be official signs, probably just put up by local people in places where their experience tells them seem vulnerable to accidents.

The weird thing is that I've only ever seen them in those two places  :?

The red discs are probably all exactly the same size - it's just an illusion caused by the contrasting backgrounds.

NI would occasionally use the plain B&W checkerboard sign to highlight that there is nothing to go straight onto, ie a dead end, extra warning that you are at a T-junction or drawing attention at a particular Y-junction (so using it instead of red marker posts to mark a bridge parapet would be entirely against the rules) but it's not an authorised sign.

There's one of those on a staggered crossroads down Fakenham way somewhere, can't quite remember where though. Similar scenarion though, long straight unlit road, and a hedge waiting for someone to drive into it opposite the end.

Was fun though

There are some checkerboard backings to junction signs around Warwickshire, especially on the Fosseway, and I think top of the M40 J13 offslip.

Phone now so no links.

I'm pretty sure the J13 one has gone now.

You're right, but at least the Google car caught them in 2010.

Fosseway and again and again.

There's one here, on the B4088 between Redditch and Evesham, at the end of a long straight section. Many years ago this was the junction of the A435 and A441, but these roads have long since been curtailed or diverted.

It seems strange that a chequerboard has been put behind the direction signs yet no attempt has been made to make the Give Way sign more conspicuous by making it larger or attaching a yellow backboard.

There are/were plenty on the B4455 (Old Foss Way between Cirencester and Leicester) for example this one where it cedes to an unclassified road at a crossroads:

C, E flat and G go into a bar. The barman says "sorry, we don't serve minors". So E flat walks off, leaving C and G to share an open fifth between them.

Is the one on the B4455 at Hunningham Hill still there? The first and so far only time the Google vehicle seems to have visited the junction was in July 2009 and since then other similar signs will have been removed, specifically as the ones at the A452/B4100 junction as already stated.

This?
And does this sign hold the record for the number of posts?

I was thinking of another one, but it was a mere footnote compared to that

If people have such bad eyesight they need this to tell them there is a t junction then perhaps they should not be driving

Gotta love how they've put it on a yellow backing board to make it stand out more. Utterly, utterly clueless.

Edit:

And if there's any further proof needed that the designer hasn't got a Scooby, the junction is preceded by this:
