Earlier Traffic Signs Manual, and translating x-heights..

Post by afarlie »

Hi,

Does anyone here happen to have a copy of the 1964 era Traffic Signs Manual, which could be scanned (assuming it's under a suitable HMSO/crown copyright?)

There were some aspects of the sign designs in it that didn't necessarily seem as obvious compared to what was in an Appendix to the Worboys report, and in terms of the metrication of the 1975 TSRGD.

Generally for some of the signs, the metric equivalents for x-height and stroke widths in 1975 seem to be rounded up or down a little.

X height.(1964) ,Metric equivalent (1975), Stroke width (1964?), Metric Equivalent. (1975), Rounded Metric, (1975), Tile heights (1975)

1", 25.0 (25.4), .24 [.25], 6.25 (6.096) [6.35] , 6 , 50 (48)
2", 50.0 (50.8), .47 [.5 ], 12.5 (11.938) [12.7] , 12 , 100 (96)
2" 1/2, 62.5 (63.5), .59 [.625], 15.625 (14.986) [15.875] , 16 , 125 (128)

It would be nice to know for future reference which tolerances were being used.

There's a whole pile of the diagrams on the relevant Digest Gallery if that will help.

Those are the ones I'd uploaded recently, I was asking about the TSM and x-heights with a view to figuring out how to make vector (SVG) versions of the diagrams in the appropriate sizes at a future date. (Especially those that didn't carry over to subsequent TSRGD).

I have the green TSM but it will be at least weekend before I can get to it.
