What sensor or camera is this on traffic light

Post by interrogatedbliss »

Hi all,

It's my first post!

I've been driving past this traffic light for ages and just wondered what sort of sensor or camera this is?

Just being nosey.

Thank you :)

I'm willing to be corrected, but I suspect it's very low power radar.

Likely to just be a vehicle detector pointing at the stop line, I’d have thought?

It is indeed a Microwave Vehicle Detector (MVD). I do believe it's a Microsense one specified for stop line detection, and has a horizontal axis, as opposed to the portrait vertical counterpart for more distant detection, usually seen on top of the signal head.

It is a Microsense AIM-S, an active infrared stop line detector.

Could these be the answer to the issue with Cycleway signals in London, where existing detectors do not apparently handle bicycles so the cycle phase operates 24x7, even though the bulk of cycle usage is peak hour commuting, and for much of the time the cycle phase is wasted.

It's always surprised me that the industry has not come up with cycleway detectors.

They should be deactivated between 7pm-7am. As should many signalised crossroads/junctions in rural areas (on non-trunk roads).
