I'm sure we could come up with thousands...
A few near me that irritate:
- Burnley Council replaced some town centre direction signs a year ago. One old sign said "Skipton, Keighley (M65 E)"; the replacement now says "Skipton (A59), Keighley (A629)" and doesn't mention the M65 at all! Whilst technically correct in that the A59 and A629 are the ultimate roads you take after the M65, I think someone missed the point. (The direction the other way still says "Manchester (M66)", not "Manchester (A665)"...)
- on the A59 west of Skipton, when they built the roundabout at the A59/A56 junction, the new direction says "Burnley (A682), Colne A56". Again, no mention of the M65. I think the person who did this one must have got a job working for Burnley Council shortly afterwards...
- on the link road between the Edenfield bypass and the old A56 through Shuttleworth & Edenfield stood a tatty, faded old primary route direction sign (presumably there since 1969 when the bypass opened) directing traffic towards "Burnley A56, Blackburn (A677), Clitheroe (A59)". It never got replaced to reflect the building of the M65, downgrading of this stretch of the A56 to non-primary post the M66 completion, or the axeing of the A677. So when it got mown down a year or two back, it was an ideal opportunity to update things. But they didn't - they just made up a carbon copy sign, in green and in dimensions suited to a major trunk route not a local secondary road. So the A677 lives on in this part of Lancashire - and the M65 is but a pipe dream.
Oh, and they still haven't moved the distance confirmation sign erected on the slip road of the bypass proper, to reflect the fact that most traffic now enters the A56 from the M66, and thus doesn't get to see the distance/route confirmations. It needs moving back 300 yards. I think the M66 was completed in 1978...
Ahem, I'm rambling again....!
- I spotted a sign for Prestwich BR station the other day. It's been a Metrolink station since 1992. And it's on the road opposite the station, so you think it would have been one of the first to the be changed...
- there must still be signs for the M63 somewhere in the GM area
